Hi guys. I need some advice on backup solutions in terms of hard drives. I purchased BVCkup as I was told this was a pretty seamless application and did a good job backing up files. I really need to know what drives would be best to use. I can’t afford 1000’s on Intel 750 or enterprise drives so really looking at a cheaper solution.
I was initially thinking of getting a 4tb Hitachi drive as their failure rate is pretty good compared to Seagate (for example) and then having two back-ups created, one on the Hitachi and one on the external WD book drive.
Nothing wrong with backing up to two external drives as you suggested, just make sure one is always off-site.
I have an external 2-bay enclosure and the drives are mirrored RAID 1, and all of my files are within a Google Drive folder on that enclosure. Then I have a dedicated external backup drive that backs up my computer’s drive and the 2-bay enclosure. Then, the contents of my Google Drive folder are sync’d to Google Drive (1TB for $10/mo).
Cheers guys. I think offsite backup is a good idea. I currently back up everything to two external drives once my project is finished but nothing offsite and nothing in the short term for current projects. Time to invest !
If you have a data limit on your home internet connection, keep that in mind. You should be able to minimize bandwidth on the program (Google Drive allows this) so you can spread out the data upload over a month or more.
Also, when my system is sync’ing to Google Drive with no bandwidth restrictions, it kills my home network bandwidth and my Netflix and other streaming services are always buffering. Limiting the file sync’ing bandwidth eliminates the buffering in my case.
