Dear Chaosgroup - Tutorials please

Grants are more about the decision making process & how to think/approach solving a problem - something which can easily be taken and applied to other concepts.
With these straight to the point videos they’re often only relevant when you’re recreating the exacts conditions in the video. Fine if you just want to see a feature and know it exists, but there’s a very different philosophy behind it compared to grants.

Good point and I completely agree… Like i said everyone has a different way of learning and for me its straight to the point. Im sure you all will agree that no matter what tutorials/guides you follow, there will ALWAYS be trial and error involved.

kinda dont want this thread to disappear into the wilderness :stuck_out_tongue:

Any progression/updates/talks/news?

Heya everyone! I for sure want to keep the discussion alive and well, too. The more I hear about specific topics you’d like to see the better, so keep them coming. Here is a podcast I was just on that talks a little about the educational perspective and what we’re working on here:
https://labs.chaosgroup.com/index.php/cg-garage-podcast/cg-garage-podcast-28-dariush-derakhshani/

Love to hear your thoughts on that stuff.

Also, we are getting going on a VR output tutorial for V-Ray 3.2 for 3ds Max as well as a Phoenix workflow tutorial rolling along.

Thanks Dariushd - ill take a listen now.

I think for me the most IMPORTANT thing is scene optimisation for interior/exteriors - time is money and i need the best quality in the least amount of time and due to the fact that there are several methods out there, it would be great if we can get an offocial guide for particular situations.

Thanks

I have gotten so screwed up by watching youtube videos and people explaining things when they have no business doing so. I get a kick out of people disagreeing with Vlado about how to use the software when he is one of the creators. I think Chaos approved training would be awesome! When I bought my first V-Ray license it came with a DVD, which confused the heck out of me. Periodically I watch it and it still makes no sense. Negitive subdiv… what???

PS - In regards to this:
Also, we are getting going on a VR output tutorial for V-Ray 3.2 for 3ds Max as well as a Phoenix workflow tutorial rolling along.

Sounds cool and I look forward to it but should that be a priority? From what I can tell scene optimisaton and how settings work should be near top (or top) of the list…

Probably should think about what most are struggling with and demanding and then tackle the requirements and priorities from there…

Well, I was thinking I will probably do a tutorial on this myself. Maybe then someone will listen

Best regards,
Vlado

And I/we cant wait! Might put some of these forum threads to bed once and for all and save your time answering them over and over and allow some new features

That would be awesome Vlado - I’d love that…the community would love it - we’d all be happy chaps

Eagerly awaiting this.

This would rock!
Really looking forward for this as well!

Stan

For what it’s worth and while we’re all waiting, Grant Warwicks mastering vray program is pretty awesome and well worth the $$.

I would also like to see optimal settings for interior and exterior architectural renderings as well as the most up to date lighting workflow.
Dome with HDRI vs. vray light vs vray sun.

Optimal is a slightly misleading term since ever scene is totally different and has factors that affect what will cause the renderer problems. It’s getting simpler thankfully

I think this is a fantastic idea purely because of the sheer amount of mis-information available.

“add 10 fill lights set to invisible, change your light cache to 50,000 subdivs, enable sub pixel mapping and set your noise threshold to 0.000001”

I wince every time I see stuff like that on forums, but it’s become so common and so long winded trying to correct it that I don’t even bother these days. It would be great just to be able to simply say “shut up, read this”.

The subdiv multiplier is a fantastic change in this regard, it used to be a struggle between things that need lots of AA and things that were geometrically simpler but needed more material sampling. Now we’ve got both to hand.

Yeah what you said kinda doesnt make sense to me - which i need explained somewhere… i mean it makes sense, but i dont know exactly how to impliment it without guessing.

subdiv multi in vray object settings. like the one in dmc but per object. lower it considerably for trees for example.

@ John and Vlado, by the way John, how far is your new tut you mentioned in another thread on here, about the “new way” of rendering with the VRay3 and the latest way of thinking? Looking forward to that, and also Vlado’s tut.

@Lele, now that Lele is working for ChaosGroup (wikihuman), maybe we can get some NEW tuts from you also?!? Will never forget your 1.5 LWF tut and can’t enough say thanks for THAT one!
