Displacement Question

Hello everyone

Im wondering anyone knows how to solve this problem. I have a brick wall texture which I have applied a displacement map to, the texture works fine but rather than extrude the brick out from texture I want to keep the brick flush with the face of the model and push the mortar into the texture. I have tried reversing the face but this doesn’t work.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

The multiplier of the displacement is always in inches, so you will have to move the surface inward the same distance (in inches) that you have for your displacement multiplier. For example, if you have 1" in your displacement multiplier, you have to move the actual surface 1" inward, because your displacement is going to displace the surface 1" to the outside.

isn’t there a way to set the “level” of the displacement back 1" in this example or is it always going outward?

Thanks for your reply fpedrogo though that method would take a lot off extra modelling especially to change my existing models.

After a some experimenting I managed to work out how to push the mortar into the texture, I will post how I did it after I do a few more tests.

Yes, you are right. Seem to be very time consuming that method. There is an easy way. You have to invert the surface to have the back face of the surface looking up, then you need to invert the texture that you are using for the mapping. Please see the attached image.


Thanks fpedrogo, this was the method I was testing (see image below) the bricks on the left have the reversed faces and the bricks on the right have the standard displacement.

This method is by far the easiest option for the project I am currently working on, I have attach an early unfinished draft image to show the extent of the brick. I have all the brick texture grouped so its just a matter opening the group reversing the faces and applying the texture.
