display gamma in RT

I usually view my renders through the vray buffer and see them in 2.2 gamma. Whilst using the demo last night, it seems that vrayRT was displaying the scene in 1.0 gamma. Is this something I have to change in RT or do I have to setup my max gamma differently now ?

You can either set the gamma in the V-Ray color mapping settings, or you can adjust the 3ds Max display gamma from the 3ds Max preferences.

Cheers Vlado. So, I would have to manually swap between gamma settings when previewing/rendering my scene to see the correct gamma display.

If you use the V-Ray frame buffer, your 3ds Max gamma settings will not affect the production rendering, so why would you need to swap settings?

Im confused. How should I have my max, Vray gamma settings setup in order to be able to see everything correctly through the vray buffer and so the materials are not dark in the material browser..

What settings are you using now?

I’m also confused, I have Max set up to display Gamma 2.2 but it’s obviously displaying a Gamma that is different from that. Is where is Vray RT getting it’s gamma setting from and how do you adjust them?

The ActiveShade window is managed by 3ds Max, and it will use the current display gamma settings of 3ds Max (at least this is what happens over here).

I can change both the 3dsmax gamma and vray gamma to affect the RT display. I cannot have both on like I normally do when rendering via the vray buffer. So, my settings are:

max gamma: 2.2
Vray gamma: 2.2

Input gamma: 2.2

and I view through the vray buffer without the srgb button.

What I normally do is:

(*) have 3ds Max display gamma to 2.2, sRGB button in the VFB ON, V-Ray gamma 2.2 and “Don’t affect colors” to on, OR
(*) have 3ds Max display gamma to 1.0, sRGB button in the VFB OFF, V-Ray gamma 2.2 and “Don’t affect colors” off.

In both of these cases the RT preview accurately reflects the rendered image. However in your case it is more complicated, I have to think a little if it can be adjusted to show the ActiveShade/regular 3ds Max RFW properly.

For normal rendering these are the settings I use:

Max Preference Settings
-Display Gamma 2.2
-Affect Color & Materials
-Input Gamma 2.2
-Output Gamma 1.0

Vray Frame Buffer Settings
-Frame Buffer enabled
-Get Resolution from Max

Vray Color Mapping
-Linear Multiply
-Dark multiplier 1
-Bright multiplier 1
-Gamma 2.2
Sub pixel mapping
Affect Background

These settings allow me to save out the same image I see in Vray, the only way I can find to get Vray RT to even look close is by turning on Linear Workflow but even then it’s not a perfect match. All of this is being used with physical camera, sun & sky.

This is the same settings that i use, i got the same problem.

I see; will have to think of something for this particular configuration - basically you get the gamma correction applied twice (once from the V-Ray color mapping, and once from the 3ds Max Display gamma).

Thats exactly right. I thought the config I had setup was the way most people using the LWF had it setup.

Wouldn’t know about that… none of the beta testers brought this issue up :slight_smile: Should not be too hard to correct this though.

why twice???

Since he has max output gamma to 1, VRay color mapping “don’t affect colors” unchecked and he doesn’t use sRGB button, to me everythig should fine, isn’it?
…or am I losting again into LWF maze :slight_smile:

Edit 1: The only “twice gamma” issue happens cloning VFB into max FB

Yeah, but the 3ds Max display gamma is set to 2.2, and it is this one that is applied to the ActiveShade window.

let me summarize a bit

max display gamma affects Max Frame Buffer and Active Shade
max display gamma DOESN’T affect VRay Frame Buffer so we use gamma in VRay Color Correction

because of RT using Active Shade, he has max display gamma + VRay Color Correction gamma = twice gamma

For that configuration wouldn’t it work to just toggle on “adaptation only” for RT renders? In other words actually using LWF?

I work in linear and use Max input/output at 2.2, Vray’s gamma at 2.2, and ‘adaptation only’. This gives me LWF and with the sRGB button on I get a match in the VFB to what I get in the Max FB, and in RT. No problems at all.

If I want to end up in 8bit or 16bit with my finals I still render with LWF, just save the final image out to a non HDR format (or more usually I just render in linear and convert in Photoshop later). This way I have only one workflow for everything.
