You’ll get it… we’ve been working on an offline+online licensing system for a while now. Our plan is to make an experiment and release V-Ray for Modo without dongles in a couple of months, see what problems come up, fix them, and then introduce that to V-Ray for 3ds Max and Maya towards the end of the year.

That sounds good to me. The office cleaner managed to knock my dongle out of my workstation recently, causing me some grief! I now have it plugged in at the back of the machine out of harm’s way…
I wonder if you might consider enabling the license to be used on multiple machines (not simultaneously obviously). As in enable us to work from home on a home workstation using the same license as we use at work, in the same way we can with our 3ds max licenses. This would be hugely welcome.
That’s not a problem for the online license, but obviously you need to have active internet connection. You can also borrow an online license for use on a specific machine in offline mode, but you need to remember to return it if you want to move it to another machine.

You can already do this. all our licenses are on a single machine in the new york office, everyone in the miami office checks them out through the day and i can check them out to use one while i’m at home too.
e: you may just be making sure this can still be done when it’s switched over, sorry.

The borrowed machine may be broken down or stolen.

It will be fine, generally. It is renewed automatically after some time. If the machine is offline, the license is returned to the online pool.

This is news to me. When I asked support about it recently I was told that it wasn’t possible at all to use your license in a separate location without moving the dongle.
From what I can see in our system (Ticket #135688 ) my colleague Greta Lazarova provided the following answer:
V-Ray uses a floating licensing system and it can obtain licenses from the V-Ray license server, running on any machine, which can be accessed through your network, or even over Internet.
Which means that it is possible to use the license in a separate location without moving the dongle by accessing it through the network or over Internet.
Would you please check our reply again and let us know if the provided information is different from the above one?

I can’t seem to find any of the emails at the moment for some reason. I went away with the clear impression that in order to do what I wanted to do I would need a new license, but perhaps I misunderstood. I’ll see if I can dig out the emails.
Edit: found the emails. For some reason that reply about the internet method went into my spam so I missed it. I’ll look into this! Sounds like it should work fine, assuming that the internet connection doesn’t drop.
I used to do this at work all the time using logmein hamachi which was a free drive sharing utility. You ran the software on your work and your home machine and added them both into a pool of computers. Any shares you had set up on your work computer were then easily mappable on your home computer using hamachi’s technology which handled all the VPN stuff in the background for you and just gave you a simple ip for the other computer. As well as sharing drive mappings, hamachi also shared ports. I had the vray license server and dongle running on my work machine, so it was easy to connect to the vray license server using the ip from hamachi and then whatever port number you were using for your vray license server.
The current company I’m working for has a much more closed off firewall though so I can’t do the same thing as easily.

Hi! Any news about this issue?
I´ve got kind of an incident with my dongle and i can’t have it temporarily to use it.
It would be nice to have an alternative before i have to order another one from my reseller. Because it’s urgent and there is no chance to retrieve the “old” one.
Anything would be appreciated. I know it sounds silly but i had to ask.

That’s great news! I always fear the day my dongle will stop working for some reason like kids spilling juice on it or whatever and then loose a multi-billion contract because of that!!! 
Serioulsy the other day my 2 years-old son catched my dongle during a intense job and started running with it… I almost had a heart attack!
