Double sided glass problem

I have a scene where there are glass balustrades that return at 90 degrees (pop out balcony) The material is the clear glass (for this example) vray material. My problem is that although the material is applied to the front and back faces it still renders differently depending on what side of the face is visible to the camera. I realise that you can work around it by reversing faces to suit the view but this is a hassle when I want to render several views which will show both sides of these faces. Any ideas?

Remove the refraction layer when you only have one faced glass. You need ‘thick’ glass when you use refraction.

I was about asking the same thing!
Hey Thom, how much is considered ‘thick’ ? The minimum value, do you know?
Any value that creates a solid maybe?

“Thick” = a solid.
Not “Think” = a single surface.

Thanks for the quick response, solved my problem. To clarify:

Single face glass - ensure option for double sided material is checked and do not use refraction map
thick (solid, extruded, pushed pulled…) glass - use material without double sided option checked and you can use refraction mapping.

please correct me if i’m wrong but i think this is right according to my tests

Hey, I have another question: when I apply grass mat to a face it render just grey. Why? I think this is not the case of making it ‘thick’…

An oh, is there someone here who knows where could I find a chain link material? Because V-Ray renders the SU mat wrong, and it gives full shadow, no holes in it. :frowning:

no too sure about your grass issue, but the you will need to use a transparency map to make the open fence/wire material render correctly, do some searching on how to use them correctly

Thanks for the tip, I have read about transparenyc map and I followed the instructions on V-ray to SU manual, however I didn’t achieve the waited result.

Is it a bug, since I have seen other users with the same problem? (Assuming I did the correct steps…)
