Unfortunately, DR rendering for GPU rendering doesn’t work between our workstations (macOS) and render servers (Windows); bucket rendering works without any issues.
On the screenshot, you can see the error message:
I’m currently using V-Ray 7.4 and have already tried out several versions (nightly builds). The following version of V-Ray is installed on the workstation and the render servers:
Workstation : vray_74000_c4d2026_dr2_bigsur_univ_stable_33695
Renderserver : vray_adv_74000_c4d2026_dr2_x64_stable_33695
Workstation :
Chip: Apple M4 Max
Speicher: 128 GB
macOS : Tahoe 26.6
Renderserver 01 : Windows 11 Version 25H2 (Build 26.200.8875)
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX 32-Core Processor
128GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090
NVIDIA Driver Version 610.62
Renderserver 02 : Windows 11 Version 25H2 (Build 26.200.8875)
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 32-Core Processor
128GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090
NVIDIA Driver Version 610.62
Can you please help me?
Best regards, Uwe
Hi,
The errors you are seeing are actually expected. You are trying to start a V-Ray GPU (Metal) render. Metal is Apple’s technology and only exists on macOS. When your Mac asks the Windows machine to render using Metal, the Windows node can’t run it.
If you want to use that Windows render node, you’ll need to switch to CPU.
Hi zhanet.georgieva,
Thanks for your feedback! I’m not sure that’s the problem. We’ve been using V-Ray for a few years, and DR rendering has always worked well in our setup (Mac as the workstation, Windows as the render server). If we’re using V-Ray 6.2, it’s running smoothly on both CPU and GPU without any issues. But when we try to render the same files with V-Ray 7.4 using the GPU, I get the error message I mentioned in my first post. If V-Ray 7.4 doesn’t support DR rendering with the GPU in a mixed Mac and Windows environment, could you let us know as soon as possible? That way, we can tweak our workflow and save some time on troubleshooting.
Thank you so much!
Best regards
Uwe
The reason for this behavior is that with the release of V-Ray 7, we introduced official support for the Apple Metal API on macOS for V-Ray GPU (as noted in our documentation here: V-Ray 7 ).
Hi zhanet.georgieva,
Thanks for your Feedback. So, starting with V-Ray 7, I can no longer use GPU DR rendering in mixed rendering environments.
Thank you very much for your help!
Best regards,
Uwe
