Enscape for Product Design?

Hey All -

I’m interested in learning more about Enscape’s rendering capabilities for product design renderings. I know its optimized for architectural visualization but I’d like to see if it can be set up to create scenes for studio type render environments (see attached examples). I have seen only a handful of tutorials for non architecture projects and no related forums to speak of. Any insight or comments would be helpful. Thanks!

You are right in saying that Enscape isnt set up for product rendering (and there are certainly good, but very expensive alternatives that are) but it is possible.

I did these a while back but essentially, it is about placing your ‘product’ into a studio setting. Software like Keyshot for example does this very well but with Enscape, I found the best way is to model a room/box and set up Enscape Lighting as if it were a real studio space.

This model can be used over and over, allowing you to simply place your product in the space. Lighting strength, colour or rotation can be done to get the look your after but if you want more natural ‘outside’ reflections, the alternative is to use a HDRI.

Wow, these look phenomenal. Nice work, thanks for sharing the images and your methodology. If you have the time I’d love to know what the lighting setup was for your renderings.

Yeah, I’m also looking at Keyshot but since most of my work is architecture (product design is a smaller side job) I’m hoping that I can get some halfway decent results with Enscape. I’m on a budget so can’t really afford two rendering programs right now. If you know of any more information resources for Enscape product design (tutorials, forums, etc.) feel free to share. Thanks again!

Hi, thank you.

Check out my Instagram profile @ryan_boundy_design

There’s years of my work with SketchUp, Enscape, Keyshot and Lumion, all of which have advantages and disadvantages over one another. I actually did these in Keyshot originally to provide me with a benchmark and then tried with Enscape. It did take a lot more effort but the final outcome was pretty much identical.

Like you, my primary for the last 25+ years has been architecture with some product work here and there. The sample images you uploaded were done in Keyshot and other ‘high end’ products so you may struggle to achieve the same result but that’s not to say it’s impossible.

Enscape isn’t a ‘one product for all’ but it’s certainly a damn fine product (and cheaper than Keyshot!)

That’s good to know, thx. Nice Instagram work btw. If you don’t mind me asking what was your Enscape scene set up for the iphone renderings? (lights, environment)

Example images here showing the studio model set up. In general, you have to play around a lot with HDRI, lighting, time of day etc. to get the look you are after.

This was done as a test for the exact same reasons you find yourself with and while happy with the outcome, it showed me that Keyshot for product design (and for some people far more talented than me) hyper-realism, is by far the easiest and most effective product.

Everything else (currently), just takes too much effort!

Thanks! This is exactly what I was hoping to get some insight on methodology so I can get started. Your images are very informative, much appreciated. I like how you set up the lighting. And, yes, Keyshot may be the best way to go for this exercise but I will give Enscape a try first to see if I can get decent results. If not then I’ll sell my bike and buy Keyshot as well. Thanks again!

This is great - can i ask are you modelling 1:1 scale or have you made your models bigger within sketchup?

These models are all 1:1 however, SU does not like such small details. To navigate this, I create a model at 1:10 as a component, alongside the 1:1 version here. One to work with and another to render.
