Foam much slower to render in PhFD 3.12 than in PhoenixFD 3.0

Foam and splash rendering Is like 20 times faster now with latest nightly. At least on my scene i´m working with  Good job !!

Hehe, hope it helps!

I don’t know how is 20 times faster when in my system is about 2 sec slower.
I render a few frames of my scene
In the previous nightbuild I had 2:27 and 3:32 (in some frames
And in the latest nightbuild (2 January) on the same frames I have 2:29 and 3:34
So its not only faster quite the opposite (of course for a very small margin) but still way off to be faster.

I don’t know why but as I said in my previous posts it takes time to calculate when is a lot of foam (when it does transforming vertices)

I’m still waiting for the Phoenix log…

I forgot that sorry :stuck_out_tongue:

And by the way why I don’t have the faster render foam?

Zach

Thank you! This seems to be a different scene though - it’s not the beer scene and the grid size is quite different, so we are not talking about the same thing at all.

If you like, please link the scene you are using and we’ll continue from there…

Cheers!

No its not the beer scene.
I used the beer scene to check if my suspicions were right. (that the foam is slower than in the 3.0 version of phoenixfd)
I will send the scene to support but I don’t know how it would help you.
Its not that the scene is wrong.
Whenever I have foam, the foam except of the 1st time I render a frame, the next time it would take a lot of seconds to pass the transformation vertices stage of the render. If the scene has a lot of foam.

And again you didn’t answer my question.
Why after using the latest nightly still I haven’t seen any difference whatsoever in the render speed of the foam, when other people seen a difference.

I still gotta figure out why, can’t answer the question yet. Was hoping that the Phoenix log would contain something suspicious, but seems like the usual suspects are all fine. Do you happen to have a V-Ray log from the first render which is fast and then the slow one?

So both the beer and the Liquid_Stream03b scenes are not getting faster with the new nightly?

Nope as I said yesterday actually are about 1-2 secs slower in most frames (sometimes are the same)
So this is my question at the moment.
Why I haven’t seen any speed improvement? If I take into account the post from Magnum_design that he was referring to big improvements in foam render speed.

Indeed, I hope that using the same scene as you will help find the answer.

You will find it as you always do.

I want to explain the rendering slowdown a little more, so you will have a better understanding.

Lets say i want to render for the first time (after I load the scene) a frame with 200.000 foam particles.
After I hit render, it would take about a sec to begin rendering (begin rendering = we see the render buckets forming on the image).
Lets say after that I want to render again the same frame.
It would take about 20 secs till we see the render buckets appear. And the more the foam particles the more the time we wait for the render buckets (1million+ foam would make this time period about 1 min)
Now lets say I want to render an animation, after the first time render (the time we first render the frame without this “delay”)
It would again take some secs on the first frame but only on the first. The rest of the frames that contain foam will render without delays.
Thats the strange thing.

Zach

PS. Do you have a discord channel? Because will be easier for me to explain the issues by voice.

Indeed, I am doing the same thing, but it starts quickly every time. Can you tell me the exact version of Max 2017 you are using, so I can get as close as possible to your setup using the beer scene here?

I am using Max 2017 with SP 3

Hey, thanks to the scene you sent, the issue is finally reproduced! Will ping you when the fix is in the nightlies!

Cheers!

Oh thats great!
Good Job again.

Zach

PS. Does the fix include the solution as to why my foam is not getting any speed boost after the latest nightly?

Hey, the fix for the slow second render is in the nightlies now. However, the speed difference is there on our machines - and there is a specific thing about it - you will get a higher speed up the more bubbles you have intersecting the liquid surface. If many bubbles are above or below the surface, there won’t be that much of a speedup.

Cheers!

Oh great, thanks
What do you mean by the “more bubbles intersecting the liquid surface”?
You mean the situation when the bubble goes from inside the liquid → above the liquid?

Regards,
Zach

Yup, the bubbles are spheres, and the problem was when they were half-submerged in the liquid

Ok thanks for the answer. I didnt think something like that will cause so much slowdown

Regards,
Zach

Oh, the reason is much more in depth, but this is the way for you to measure it intuitively without having the burden of technical details - the change affects particles floating exactly on the liquid surface, so the most of these you have, the quicker it will render now.

Cheers!
