The last two days I have been struggling to get a photo-studio setup for lighting/reflections for some glass pieces I modeled. I got motivated to model some glass pieces after browsing through a book by Menno Jonker, a great dutch glass artist ( http://www.mennojonker.com/ ).
But I am mostly involved in architecture renderings, so this took me some time to get it right. Since I never do small object renderings..

First of all don’t put the reflection enviroment hdri map in the environment slot.
Use the hdri map for every single material you want reflections for, in this case all materials except the matte table top.
So the table top is a vray material (reflection RGB 0,0,25) and some glossy reflections, on top of that a vray material wrapper set for matte object. And if I remember correctly I mapped the table top .jpg from the hdri background, some PS work involved. You have to play with the settings a little bit..
Curious about the first images, as I have a material of similar look.
Obviously the outer material is glass, what is the inner material?
More to the point how was the inner material made? It has some
interesting soft fall-off like qualities that give it both a metallic
and viscous/thick liquid feel.
The inner material is quite simple: vray material with a little bit reflection (rgb 0,0,50). But I think it has to do with the model the way the materials behave..
I modeled a spline front view, inner and outer line is one shape, lathe, then I put some modifiers on it (bend, taper, twist) then editable mesh and selected the inner faces of the later to become liquid or whatever. and detached in the end..
Thanks , it is amazing the sheer number of effect you can get just from
using VRay. When I get closer to completion on the model I am working on
I will post so you can see the why I was asking.
