GPU based RT Vray - for Rhino too?

Today I have seen this incredible video:

This is a revolution!!! For me it more interesting than “simple” :wink: RT, because speed&quality is what I need most. The big question is, will ASGvis implement it to Rhino and what will be the time frame. The implementation of the full Vray to Rhino is quite slow and nobody know, when it will be done. So, what can be expected for RT GPU? If Vray is hundred times faster at 3dsmax as at Rhino than it’s a big problem.
My hope is, that the new technolgie dosn’t need to much plugin work and it’s more a question of the chaosgroup core development.

This is awsome but I have a feeling that it wont come to rhino for quite a while. I have a feeling it wont be in the next year (but hopefully sooner). You can build a super computer with 4 GTX 295 (8 GPU’s total) for about $2000 and probably be faster than a $50,000 renderfarm.

In a year we should see the GT300 series from Nvidia which promises to be much faster than the GTX295 (which is dual GPU). That demo was on a GTX 285 which is only nvidias second fastest card and there is only one of them. Imagine if you had 3 or even 4.

Well, in my opinion, having the capability of Vray as GPU based render engine, is an enormous step forward and huge competitive advantage over those who don’t have it. So, my gut tells me that in order to stay competitive, VFR and VFSU would need to adopt it. As far as time frame, I can only hope that it wouldn’t be to terribly long before it was adopted after VF3ds. But maybe I’m being too positive :wink:

I know that I would jump at the chance for a GPU vray in a heartbeat. It would make soooo many peoples lives so much easier.

So this speed is based on your graphic card not on your CPU or…?
Im seeing this and its unbelivable! Realy an revolution in every way of rendering process!
Who would go back to classical rendering after this?

He is using a core i7 machine with a GTX 285 GPU. I could build one for around $1200 or buy one from dell for about $2100

John, sorry for the ignorance, but what advantages i7 has let’s say over Intel core2 quad 2.40Ghz Q6600?

The core i7 is about 60-70% faster than the 2.4ghz core2 quad. Even though the i7 920 is 2.66ghz and the Q6600 is 2.4ghz the i7 is MUCH MUCH faster clock for clock. There are many technical reasons for this that I cannot really explain quickly but it comes down to smaller die size, integrated memory controller, QPI, DDR3 and finally Hyperthreading.

Autograss is a very good plugin that wasn’t made by Chaosgroup. So the we can’t make autograss for Rhino. That is a good question to ask to the company that made autograss.
GPU technology still in development. So we have to wait for seeing if we can implement that technology for Rhino.

Also, what is the general raodmap of VfR? When will it be a nearly complete Vray plugin? I have the feeling, the VfR village is at the end of the world - the living there is peaceful slow and on a basic level without big changes. If chaosgroup would release a RT GPU version with SDK tomorrow - how long it would need to get it at Rhino?
I would like to get more advanced features/materials and more often bug fixes - should I look for an other modelling programm with Vray? Maybe a full plugin (compared to 3dsmax) isn’t the goal. Why not - for example I have seen Vray for truespace. This plugin seems to be for a basic usage only too. It would be good to know what will be the near and far future of Vray.

I agree with micha (only for me vfsu)… I also would like to know where we stand in a few months… a year maybe. Compared to 3d max we’re far behind already and it looks like the gap is going to be bigger and bigger. I see alot of replies from u guys in treaths… " that’s going to be in the new release" … but when can we expect the new release… in a few weeks, months, years… and what’s going to be the difference? Could u post screenshots form the beta version or something. I know you guys do your best but I’m not 100% convinced with su and vfsu yet after working with these tools for a few months now.

Hello everyone ;D! Well first of all, I would like to say that I’m very pleased to see all of the excitement out there about the new release coming up. I know there have been lots of questions and concerns about the new release, we have been trying to answer as many as we can, as quickly as we can. Our goal right now, is to rewrite our existing products so they are cross platform compatible, and more flexible. The rewrite is going quite well, and is near completion (not bad when you consider it took us 5 years or so to get to the old product to the point where it was, and it’s taken us less than a year to rewrite it in a different programming language for two operating systems).

When we are finished our new version, you should notice a couple changes here and there, but the overall look and feel should still be about the same. The real difference between our old version, and this new version, is our ability to rapidly add new features, ui, customizations, little tweaks, etc. For instance, yesterday it took me about 10 minutes to completely write the rectangle light’s UI. Compare that to a few days with our old version.

We have been trying to keep a developer blog, which is a one way form of communication from the developers, to you guys. It’s a one way form of communication, because every minute we spend talking to you guys, is a minute we could be spending developing our product. We don’t have a PR guy or some silly marketing guy writing that stuff up. If you see anything on that developer blog, it’s either from Joe, or Justin, or myself (our 3 developers). Now, back to the main topic of this thread, V-Ray Realtime. Are we planning on adding it to V-Ray for Rhino? What about V-Ray for SketchUp? The answer for now, is no. We won’t be adding this to our upcoming release. We don’t have access to everything we need to implement realtime in our next product yet. In addition, you guys have been waiting long enough for a new release, and we want to release something as soon as possible. The good news is that once we do get the go ahead by Chaos Group, and we have access to all of the code that we need, we will be able to add realtime capabilities to our product, and shouldn’t take too awful long either. It mostly depends on how much interaction with the host application is needed on the back end. If most of the heavy lifting only needs to be done on our side… the workload gets cut down dramatically.

Well, I’m going to get back to work. Today I’m going to try to add the rest of our material types, so far we only have the layered brdf material in place. We appreciate everyone’s patience, we know that waiting for new functionallity can be unbearable. We are doing our best to try and expedite the process as much as possible so we can get a release out the door to you guys.
