GPU progressive Caustics on Metal (V-Ray 7.2)

Hi all

Looks like the new caustics support on Metal is using the old photons caustics approach.

Can we have progressive caustics on metal please?

cheers

You mean Metal as in macOS Metal? Will investigate and write back.

EDIT: The devs told me that GPU caustics work only with the old Photon Map method everywhere. I reckon it looks like progressive caustics elsewhere, due to the speed.

yep, MacOS Metal:)

Read edit above.

Cheers.

On some renders we can see the large old school photon circles.

Looks nothing like progressive caustics our side and I guess would need all the tweaking of settings like the old photon days.

Hi there,

The GPU implementation is different to the CPU implementation. The GPU implementation is most importantly super fast, and gets improved with time. If you run into any issues or if you have suggestions, please let us know.
Progressive Caustics code is not GPU compatible, we couldn’t port it to GPU

Best,
Muhammed

For the scene you posted above you should be able to get a similar result to progressive Caustics. Is there a chance you could attache the scene?

Best,
Muhammed

Sorry for the delay - I deleted the file but just put another together.

Also worth noting/asking - all the metals and transparent shaders render a fair bit brighter in GPU compared to CPU?
