how can i make my v ray renders look more like a handrawn sketch/illustration?

ok, to most of you on here this will sound like a contradiction in terms - why would i want my vray images to look less realistic

however, im working with a client on a concept presentation and we do not want the visuals to be polished and “this is what your getting” whilst the design concept is still being ironed out

the sketchup only views whilst i can apply the materials and finishes end up very flat, with no lighting (Apart from the sunlight) and no reflections - hence im wondering if i could render in vray, but not as a photo more like an illustration?

A couple of suggestions you could try.
The first one would involve:
1. set up a suitable material selection
2. use V-Ray Toon materials in combination with the rest of your material palette. (there are some presets in the Diagrammatic category of the V-Ray Preset Material Library)

The other one - utilizing V-Ray Viewport Rendering (VPR - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/…ing+in+V-Ray)::slight_smile:
1. use one of the existing SketchUp Styles or define your own (using SketchUp Style Builder) and set it as the current one
2. open the V-Ray Output render settings and set suitable image width/height values. (optionally, use Match Viewport aspect ration and manually match the values)
3. Run Viewport Rendering from the main V-Ray toolbar. Use the key combinations Ctrl & [ and Ctrl & ] to achieve overlay opacity that suits your needs
4. When the rendered output’s noise is sufficiently refined, use Extensions > V-Ray > Rendering > Export Viewport to save an image file out of it
5. Once done, you can stop the interactive VPR. If you need additional channels, simply run a standard production render after setting up the Render Elements list
6. You can further edit the output image file by loading it back in the VFB and using its Color Correction settings (https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/…or+Corrections)

A few notes:
- there are a few minor core issues with Toon material which produce undesirable results - namely with opacity maps and light objects located between objects with MtlToon and the camera
- when using VPR with partial overlay some V-Ray objects may be visible or not properly represented (e.g, V-Ray Infinite Plane, Fur and Clipper widgets, Proxy preview models)
