I have a problem with saving the image with the same result as on the frame buffer! :((

I’ve tried many different things — changing the color management settings, using “override” on export, and nothing helped. I switched to sRGB with Gamma 2.2, and in the end I just got completely confused.
I would really appreciate some help and a clear explanation.

This can be a minefield, and depends on so many things.

Firstly, the software you’re using to open the render may be displaying the render incorrectly.

Secondly, how are you saving the image? Using the save button from the VFB? If so, switch to saving via the settings, and in a format such as .exr so you don’t lose any information. You’ll also have choices to burn in the colour corrections from the VFB, which will remove the floating point capability of the exr file, but it will include any post effects and colour corrections you’ve made in the VFB.

Thirdly, when importing in your ,exr files, check how the image is being read. In aftereffects and premiere pro it’s called “interpret footage” and in there are colour settings for import.

Mind if you attach/send this scene so we can troubleshoot?

EDIT: Before that, ensure that the “Lookup Table” layer has the “Save in Image” option active.

I am having the same issue. I work in Gamma 2.2 workflow. When I save rendered images from VFB to JPG or PNG, they saved as if I have VFB Display correction as Gamma 2.2. But when I save image from VFB to EXR, then they display as if I have VFB Display correction as sRGB. ‘Save RGB primaries conversion to image’ in sRGB display correction do not make any effect to images saved in EXR nor JPG. So, if EXR images saved as they look in sRGB display correction then I need JPG or PNG images saved with the same sRGB look instead of Gamma look. The only way for me to save JPG or PNG images from VFB in sRGB look is to copy VFB image into clipboard, open image viewer/editor (I use IrfanView), paste image from clipboard and save file to JPG and PNG. Only in this case I will have JPG and PNG files looking same way as EXR file and VFB rendered image in sRGB display correction. I have attached images and test file in Max2024 format, but I work in Max2026.3, V-Ray v7.20.08.
Please note, that when I say about how EXR looks, I say how it looks in Chaos Player.

This is expected. Read more here.

This option saves the Rendering RGB Primaries (Render Setup > Settings > Color management). When working with Gamma Workflow and its default sRGB primaries, that option would indeed not make a difference.

There’s no way to do this directly in 3ds Max; however, you can do it in post. You basically output the .exr, open it in PS, and resave to jpg/png with the sRGB profile baked. There’s a paragraph at the end of the above-mentioned article precisely about this.

This has become a complete and utter misery for me. I can’t save the result, and this is a terrible workaround. Why can’t everything work well by default? Why do I need any additional steps to output the result, as it looks in the framebuffer even without any adjustments?..cant use vray

Can you explain why JPG image saves in Gamma 2.2 look instead of sRGB look shown in VFB? I just want to save what I see in VFB. I have to save it via clipboard instead of direct save, what is awkward.

Simply because our output (8-bit images) utilizes the 3ds Max output, which supports only Gamma 2.2, whereas EXRs are saved Raw (so the sRGB display correction is applied in the image viewer instead).

Ok, thanks. I will use awkward method of saving images to JPG via clipboard. I will name it “v-ray method”.
