After the massive hype around this thing most people feel a bit disappointed.
But it’s kind of cheap for the things it does, starting at 499.
I really like to have it but it will take some time until it is available here in germany.
I think it will be useful for sketching ideas onto the screen with (pressure sensitive ?) multi-touch.
I rather go with the new OpenPandora. It is cheaper and I can really carry it around. A good try from Apple though, maybe some revisions down the road it will be a must have for me.

Wanting linux and python on the go kind of excludes beautiful bezel framed gadgets at this point.

I was hoping for something more similar to a substitute for a laptop computer running OSX. Having USB ports, multitasking, flash, etc… not a giant iPod Touch. Although I would like to have an e-book, magazine reader.
Bet it would be great with logmein ignition for remote desktopping to check on renders…
When I found out I could get VNC on my iPhone and manage the office render farm from a bar stool, it made the cost of the thing totally worth it. Didn’t make my wife too happy, but she still likes it better than me being tethered to a laptop and wifi. Anything more than checking the render queue and maybe a frame here and there and I boot up my laptop at home. It’s still way easier to operate with a full mouse and keyboard for me.
isnt the ipad less technology in a larger package? sounds counter productive

Think they wanted to silence the demand for a net-book, Jobs and Microsoft hate the things cause they are so bottom line for them. Think this is good from factor for some one in the market for a net book who is not much of a computer expert.
It does compete more with the Kindle than a net-book, but you also get color, the ability to play music, video and games and surf the web, as long as you don’t visit any sites that use Flash video…and need to multi task…
ive been hearing all about this “no flash video” stuff… doesnt youtube use flash video?
I read someone rationalized that to the point that not having flash on it is a gift so that users do not have to put up with agressive flash adds. That is why Apple can laugh it all the way to the bank. A user base like that is priceless.
It started with flash, then moved to MPEG H.264, now it’s moving to HTML 5

so why the hype?

It’s not a tablet. It’s not “Our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device”.
And so sayeth Jobs. And rainbows and unicorns came forth from his buttocks. And the believers waited in lines and provided their first born.
It’s just another revenue stream to place people on a permanent upgrade path for the features it should have come with in the first place. Hence why the Nano got a camera and the Touch didn’t.
Plus:
No camera for video chat.
Enough storage for a true media device? Not that you could watch or transfer a DVD to in anyways.
A lame Bluetooth keyboard dock.
An odd resolution for movies.
Yeah, it comes unlocked but who in the hell uses micro-SIM? AT&T.
It costs the same as a Kindle? You’ll have to add on $120 for 3G so you can download books when you don’t have WiFI access, plus the cheap $15/month data plan.
Here’s hoping the other companies with tablets planned produce something more serious.

Make the iPad Touch slightly larger and offer it with or without a base. The iPad Touch would run the iPhone OS and the base would run OSX. Perfect!
I’d probably pickup a base model without the 3g. I use my iPhone in the bedroom and bathroom all the time (don’t borrow my phone) to surf the web, check emails, and watch videos.
I only wished the screen was larger - and it appears that has come.
As for doing actual work on it, even a high-end laptop is mostly impossible and within a few years you’ll be finding yourself purchasing another one.
Most people don’t even need a full-fledged laptop. All they need is to keep their appointments through a calendar, check their email, write an occasional document, and surf the web for porn. All of that stuff you can do on this thing.
Even if it was to have a presentation to a client - I could play a video and store my photos on it. A laptop is overkill unless you’re willing to sit in their office and try to make changes while they watch over your shoulder.
It’s also better than a Kindle. I really think this device hits a sweet spot - I think it would be even “sweeter” if they could knock an additional $100-$200 off of it.
The down side is storage, lack of Flash, and extensibility.
I think the lack of Flash is completely intentional and has nothing to do with “increased bandwidth and processing.” If Apple opened up Flash on their platform, that would suddenly allow third-parties to develop software on it which would bypass the iStore. Currently, the iStore takes 30% commission on everything sold. If Flash was opened up, they’d only get a fraction and Apple’s “standards” would take a dump.
for sure the market for this type of device is not CG artist, Designer,etc…because we do need a lot more power and bigger screens… from my business point of view it doesn’t make sense to buy one of those…it would be a good one if you really travel a lot and you carry your own movies, games, etc.
would see what happen with the Ipad… I read somewhere that Ipad is already taken then Apple has some problems to have the rights to use that name.

Would you be able to say how you got this working, do you need the pay vnc? I often have to come in to check renders, but it’d be nice to know when to get in early to fix it or when I dont need to go in until much later because my render isnt done.
