surely, extracting the render mesh does help. Don’t forget to delete the original objects and every invisible object, as well.
In general, large resolution rendering is done in two steps:
- Prepass in lower resolution
- Final rendering in full resolution
Do the following
- check the “Don’t render final image” option in the Global switches menu
- set the output size to half the original size
- hit the render button
- when the prepass is complete, save the vrmap in the IM, PM, DMC or LC rollout
- have this map loaded using the “from file” option above
- reset the output size to the original format
- uncheck the “Don’t render final image” option
- hit the render button
If the prepass still doesn’t work, render to disc using the “Render to VRImage” command. Usually, this is neccessary for the prepass only.
Alternatively, use a lower resolution and/or meshing setting for the prepass.

The process explained:
Opening the converted image in Photoshop will give you a washed out 32bit version of what you’ve rendered.
So, you need to correct the gamma. Under Image --> Adjustments --> Exposure --> Gamma Correction, set the value to .4545 (Devin came up with this number).
And you need to convert it to 8bit in order to save it as .jpg, .png or whatever. Under Image --> Mode pick 8 Bits/Channel. You can’t set the Gamma right in the following pop-up window, just accept it as it is.
In my original proposal, I’ve used render to disc only for the prepass, which is sufficient in most cases, since the final render doesn’t take up that much memory.
Doing so, you wouldn’t need to convert the image and load it in Photoshop for post processing

Rendering to disk for prepass only its an interesting approach - I’d have to try that.
One thing though, about doing a prepass of the IR in half resolution - would not setting the IR Min and Max one step down do more or less the same thing?
From what understand - if you do a test render that looks good in 800x600 using Min/Max: -3/0 then, when you render 1600x1200 you can set Min/Max to -4/-1 and you’ll have the same quality IR solution?

@ Fernando, Thomas: However you put it, there’s always millions of ways - it only depends on the number of neccessary clicks. Here, setting the IR Min and Max would be the winner, since you wouldn’t need to re-set the resolution at all.
Anyways, I recommend to render a separate prepass to disc when it comes to high-res imaging, as stated in my original post.
