Mac Studio with M4 max or M3 ultra

Hi,

My workplace is investing in new computers, which of these chipsets would you recommend?

And is raytracing working on these?

Kind Regards

Hi @Mrenzo

I have no definitive answer for this question. Our observation: for every two generations older generation Max, newer generation Pro has roughly the same performance. E.g. M2 Max performs about as good as M4 Pro.

For Ultra version there must be one important factor though: it has basically double the core number of Max version. So I suspect M4 Max will not beat M3 Ultra, but we have not benchmarked such a setup. To really beat M3 Ultra you will need M4 Ultra. Or maybe M5-M6 Max, who knows.

As far as I know there were no significant hardware changes in regards of ray tracing implementation between M3 and M4. We don’t use it right now (we do “software” ray tracing) anyway, but if and when we will have it both m3 and m4 should work.
