matte shadow reflections

Hi,

I’m sure I’ve done this before but something’s going on now..

In a simplified scene I have a plane set to be a vray reflective material, a matte box as the floor to receive shadows and a matte cylinder casting a shadow on to the floor. I am setting them to be matte objects from vray properties,

The shadows don’t show up in the reflective plane? If I delete the box floor and put a vray plane in to receive shadows I get them - but I need to receive the shadows on geometry. Am I loosing it or has it always been like this?

I am using max9 + 1.5rc3, but just gone back to max8 + 1.5rc2 to test and its the same.

Thanks
Nick

Hi,

Here’s an image to show what I’m seeing.

Am I missing a setting somewhere?

Thanks

Hi,

Just looking for help on this again, as this is a real problem for us. We have a big project on, in which each scene has about 4 glass passes on. At the moment we are rendering each glass pass with the whole scene on as normal (with glass on 100% reflection), and then rendering out a channel to stencil it out in combustion.

So this not only doubles the actual amount of render passes, but the render times for a matte pass are so much quicker we are more than doubling the render times too.

Has anyone ever picked up the shadows of a matte object in a reflection?

It seems a very obvious thing to need to do..but maybe I’m missing something. Is there a different approach? We do need the glass as a seperate layer in combustion.

Here is a link to the test file:

Any help, or suggestions greatly appreciated…

anyone? anyone?..Vlado? Bueller?

Thanks
Nick

any luck?

There is an option “No GI on other mattes” towards the bottom of the Object settings dialog. You need to disable that (maybe it should be renamed to “No lighting on other mattes” or similar…). Then the cylinder will cast a shadow on the ground.

Best regards,
Vlado

Thanks Vlado. such an unsuspecting little check box, but makes all the difference…would be a more appropriate name I think!

Thanks again

Any chance we will be getting reflections on matte objects too? I mean, reflections which would affect the alpha too, like shadows do now.
