What exactly is MAX does when the dang thing sites at ‘not responding’, yet my CPU and RAM is practically 100% free? It just sits there and does nothing, forever (3-4 minutes and sometimes more). I can navigate without issues, picking things and doing what I want, and all of a sudden it freezes. Is there something I can do, or shouldn’t be doing?
Have you tried disabling the progressive refinement of the Nitrous viewport?
Best regards,
Vlado
Hmmm… not sure. I’ll check, once MAX decides to wake up.
It was enabled, so I disabled it. It doesn’t seemed to have helped any, but we’ll see.
Well, I can see you have 26 000 objects selected. As far as I know, MAX doesn’t like a ton of objects and when selected that makes it even worse. Why not use forest pack to place you trees, that way you only have one forest pack object.
not only that, but 26,000 shaded objects.
when doing loads of trees like that you should really use “display as box” at all times, unless you desperately need them shaded.
I have found that when I keep it shaded, it actually performs better, or at least the same. Toggling from one to the other takes 30-60 seconds, so I was just leaving it on shaded. The thing is, most of the time everything moves nicely, but out of the blue it’ll just sit and spin, for no reason. I can have everything on and shaded, pan and zoom in real time, without an issue. And other times, I can have a hand full of things on and it’ll site and spin for 3-5 minutes and then free itself up.
You do mean the Improve Quality Progressively, correct?
I have that sometimes as well, but then max don’t recover for me. I already left it for the night but was still frozen the next morning. I usually roll back to the latest autoback, that’s why I have it to every 5 min and keep everything to xrefs so the saves are fast.
One thing you should probably keep in mind : disable the maps in the viewport, it help a lot with the loading time of the files, but also keep the GPU ram low.
Stan
Disable map in viewports. Are you talking about object color under the Display Color tab?
I think Stan means the “Shaded without maps” mode.
Gotcha. I’ll try that. Thanks![quote=“3LP, post:858, topic:44879, username:3LP”]

It’s really more than just a viewport issue. I can have one thing turned on, let’s say one wall. If I pick the diffused slot, as an example, I wait. I have to wait for absolutely every movement, however it’s only 1/2 the time. It might just be how it is with a large scene, but it is driving my insane.
welcome to the wonderful world of max ![]()
Sorry I couldn’t offer a solution.
Reminds me of when I tried 3dsmax 2015 - I was getting a lot of slow down with objects and trying to use the layer manager. I rely heavily on using the layer manager to hide and freeze sets of objects so I can work with a lot of geometry. I ended up sticking with 2012 which I haven’t had any issues with. Maybe I’m being stubborn but I haven’t seen any improvements in the newer versions of 3dsmax. So unless Vray stops supporting 2012, I’m sticking with it.
it is a huge model, however the file size is less than 10MB; most things are proxies. All the building are joined per material and collapsed. I’m wondering if it’s MAX, or I would see the same limitations in Maya or any other package.
1/2 hour to set up a camera, hdri, and sun… this is ridiculous!!!
ok thats just too much.. which version of max is this again? im on 2014 and i dont have such dramatic slowdowns, particularly if most of the scene is proxies.. my scenes are often 1gb plus and the delays are usually when i expect there to be delays.
3SD MAX 2015 - the scene is actually 56MB, but still not very large. Every button I click takes 30 seconds to respond.
