I am doing a product viz of a Keybox - I want to have the front as a Mirror - but I am struggling to manage that, as the background needs to stay clear white and somehow I cant set a HDRI to get a Mirror reflection.
Attached you can see what I mean - the object “Glas FRONT” should be a Mirror (normal mirror like in bathroom or somewhere else) - right now as there is no HDRI or any other environment it stays white… ?!
Yeah it makes sense basically - any idea How I could solve that so it would look like mirror effect (one that we can see:)) in Corona/C4D or better to do that later in Photoshop?
I’d suggest placing something off camera that shows up in the reflection in the mirror - could be actual geometry, could be a simple plane with some texture on it (anything from a gradient, to a photo of something like a studio lighting set up to a room).
Or perhaps using the reflections override in the render settings might help as well. It really all depends on what you want to be reflected in the mirror. So any examples would be welcome
Is there anyone interested in a job? I need this scene to be lighted perfectly with a pure white background and only some shadow on floor… actually it sometimes overlighted…
As a 3D artist, you always have to think like a photographer. They would maybe add a spotlight hitting the floor so you would get something in the reflection. Almost anything would do.
For our product, we must have a pure clear white background each time. The product itself is always in focus and must of course be illuminated cleanly and balanced.
In this example, I’m trying to cleanly light an IKEA table on a white background (it must have shadows). Later I will have to render a white Ikea table.
However, with the light settings it will be overlit. I tried to exclude the table from the individual light sources with render tags or with the material of the table, to reduce the reflection. No chance.
Ideally, I need a pure white set where I can always illuminate the object with a different light source without it being overlit.
This way I could always illuminate the products/objects sepparat and still have a white background.
I think the problem at the moment is that the light sources are generally also responsible for the background being pure white. Somehow the lighting for the background as well as for the product must be separated…?!
The only logical way to achieve this, in my mind, is to add a shadow catcher material to your floor set to compositing. Once you adjust your lights to get nice shadows, you can then place the product over a pure white background or any color background for that matter.
This is the most basic lighting setup in Corona. You need to use shadow catcher material for the ground, set its projection mode to screen and plug solid white Corona color node to its backplate slot. Place Corona tonemap control node between Corona color and shadow catcher and uncheck all 3 its checkboxes if you want the white background always stay the same colour. Lastly plug the same tonemap control node as direct visibility override and you will have seamless transition from the floor to the background. Some terminology might be slightly different between 3ds max and C4D, but i think you should be able to figure out where to plug what.
Thank you very much for that detailed explanation!!
Will try that - nevertheless if someone is able to support me with exactly this setup with my C4D File (and get paid for that), that would be amazing !?
If this hasnt been suggested already… you can get a decent result by adding a diagonal gradient on the diffuse, reflection, and glossiness. Adjust the size and level of black/white in the gradient until your happy. I had a client that didnt like the look of a real mirror for product shots and loved the turn out.
If someone can help me setup that for Cinema 4D with attached file… Trying it, but seems that 3D Max works a bit different? And I will pay for that!! Please PN IKEA Table.c4d (2.2 MB)
