New Physical camera its a mess.

… Were is the guide to use this new features?

In the forum i only see confused users.:face_with_spiral_eyes:

I have not seen too many confused people actually. It is now a built-in Max-feature, so the docs are part of the Max docs rather than here.

It seems that the seconds of the shutter speed doesnt make any difference in the exposure. I dont know what is the problem.

i have the impression that, before this “actualization thing” the setup was easier (in relation with the camera). Now you need to change alots of things to get back to the old vray camera.

the standar spotlight doesnt work like the old version, the new physical camera.. the atenuation functions are different. Please help Vlado!

If the new camera bothers you too much, you can create the old camera by typing the following into the MaxScript listener:vrayCreateVRayPhysicalCamera()The camera will be created at the coordinate system origin. You might also want to remove the Physical Camera Exposure Control plugin.

I quickly tested at home and I was wondering if there is any switch “Exposure” in that new camera? I liked using the VRayCamera features even with HDRIs where I don’t need the exposure.

@Art48

Under the environment and effects controls you have to tick off “Active” under “Exposure Control”.

Oh - so everything runs through that Exposure now, which then uses the camera parameters? That’s actually not bad, its more unified. Thanks!

Hi Vlado… thx for the answer.
The camera its perfect but the knowledge about the new camera on vray its limited.

And the issue on the standar spotlight it doesnt response like before.

We will update the help files.
As for the spotlight I am not sure this is V-Ray related issue now, but as Vlado mentioned you can always create VRayPhysicalCamera with MaxScript and use it instead.

i just had a quick play so far with the new max physical camera… it’s completely wonderful, thanks Vlado & team

the exposure gain thing is genuis, and ticks off my no.1 wish for some kind of EV workflow in the physical camera.

That was the idea, yes

Vlado

I just downloaded Vray 3.20. Can’t wait to try it out! So far I only had the time to test the new physical camera and I’ve got a question. Does the “Image Control” settings (Highlights, Midtones, Shadows) in the Exposure Control affect anything? I changed them to different values but it doesn’t seem to affect the look of the rendering.

No, they don’t work right now. Also, I think these things are best done in the VFB, not baked into the render.

Vlado

Ok, seems logical.

I am having a terrible time with the Gamma 2.2.

Everything is over exposed.

Has that come up with 3.2 ?

No. I don’t think there are any changes there. Keeping everything at default values for both 3ds Max and V-Ray will get things right most of the time.

Best regards,
Vlado

The Exposure Gain setting controls the exposure as long as it’s set to Target. That means, no matter how much you change shutter speed or aperture Vray will always change the iso to make sure the overall exposure is the same as the target EV (try increasing EV to around 12 if it’s overexposed). If you switch it to manual iso it functions the same as the old VrayPhysicalCamera did.

Gamma 3.2! interesting… will try it out
