Ocean shader

Will there be any support soon for maya’s ocean shader?

Many thanks
PS I posted this in the max forum by mistake..sorry.

Unfortunately we have not been able to find any information on how the shader works; if you know where we can find something about this, please let us know, it will be very helpful.

Best regards,
Vlado

hi vlado, can u implement this into vray?

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=86&t=859559

this is HOT shader, based on Tessendorf waves

That one is almost there already (it’s called TexWater and it works for displacement).

Best regards,
Vlado

wow great vlado,

10x for info

Wow, that’s great!
Is this in reference to Mayas standard 2d texture “Water” or is there a specific way to apply this?
(sorry if this is a noob question)

No, I mean there is a V-Ray specific texture called “Water” (you can find it in Create > V-Ray > Create texture from V-Ray plugin). Currently this is in development and some parameters don’t have any effect. It will be a proper Maya texture shading node a bit further on.

Here is an example: Chaos: Industry-leading design and visualization software

I am also attaching the scene for this.

tex_water.zip (9.95 KB)

Thank you very much for the explanation, Vlado.
That really looks quite gorgeous. I will definitively play around with this

Is there a tex_water for 3D max as well?

No, but there is a free plugin that generates a water patch based on the same algorithm somewhere on maxplugins.de

Vlado

i’ve downloaded this test scene, but it renders empty with no water, only the background.
i’m on vray 2.0 beta is this an issue?

Hi,

There were some changes to the water after this scene was made.
Probably it is better to start from scratch and to use VRayWater texture directly (it is mean to be used as displacement texture).
Keep in mind that you have to use vector displacement and to lower the wind value (the current default is too high :frowning: ).

im going to post later today a “fixed” scene…

that will be great as I could never get this working…

HOT (houdini ocean tools) has also been partly ported to max:

HOT for maya also exist i used on my latest commercial  ill post it soon (waiting for client green light for publishing)…

Ok

this is what i got

water shader (not disp) was used for the HOT in commercial also (maybe ill share that shader too, one day  )
water_tex.zip (8.73 KB)

Its way too “roundish” for my taste. I really prefer the “streaky” look from maya ocean shader. Is there no way to implement a similar look into vray water?

i think it looks great. if you can manage. it’s certainly faster that to go to some fluid sim..

u can also get something like this with HOT if u dont like the disp solution
