PhoenixFD DR slaves can't see the cache

Hi,

I just installed phoenixFD 2.2 and like before with 2.1, I can’t render phoenix liquid woth DR. The dr slaves don’t see the cache eand they just render nothing in place of the liquid.

it’s not the usual local path issue as i understand?

My paths are setup like this:

resimulation input: $(simoutput)

resimulation output: \\SASORI\PhoeniFDcache\subEauSplash\resim\subeauSplashResim

output: \\SASORI\Projets3D_SASORI\SPB_subEau\3dsmax\scenes\testSplash\testSplash_v001_001.max_Phoenix2_frames\ND9_PhoenixFD001

input: $(simoutput)

When I render, the used path will be the resimulation output right?

Ok I just noticed we can see the resolved path just under the text input box. MY input path $(simoutput) resolves as \\SASORI\PhoeniFDcache\subEauSplash\resim\subeauSplashResim

I thought $(simoutput) would always resolves as the path written in the output text box…

So I guess if I input the resolved path in the input text box, DR will work.

the path used for the rendering depends on the resimulation checkbox state. if the resimulation is enabled, the resimulation cache files are used.
are you using the official build? i think there was a similar complain few weeks ago. can’t remember exactly.

I just tried and it doesn’t work neither…

Yes official 2.2.

you mean no matter simulation or resimulation, it does not render?

Instead of using shortcut like $(simoutput) I used the full unc path in all the boxes and the DR slaves just render black where there should be water.

Hello, if the resimulation if enabled, the resimulaiton output path is used for preview and render. Check this: Chaos Docs

Thanks svetlin. Nice docs!

I understand all this, but anyway I am now using all unc paths manually inputted everywhere and my dr slaves still don’t see the path. When I render the same scene on the network without DR, it works on all slaves. And My DR work with vray for everything except PhoenixFD

ok, i hope until the end of the day we will have the answer
we will try to reproduce it from scratch, but just for case can you send us the scene or prepare a small one that produces the issue ?

I just sent it on your email with one frame of my cache.

is it possible to be a permission problem?
can you connect to some render slave with remote desctop, and just to ensure that the cache files are really visible, open them by notepad or what you find just to be sure

My permissions on the cache folder are the same as usual. And since it render by normal network rendering I guess the permissions are ok. Also my vrayspawner services are all logged in with my credentials.

no, your permissions are ok, but the dr slaves have no permission to access your machine. we made fast test and really the dr machines did not render anything. then we tried to see the cache files using remote desctop and windows explored, and it asked for password. of course the dr slave cant provide any
the cache folder must be accessible without password.

I don’t have any problem accessing cache file by remote desktop. I am not asked for password… it is just a regular windows share. My dr slave can acess my texture which are shared the exact same way but they can’t access the Phoenix cacha. Is this a bug on your side?

well, this sounds strange. however the textures are not correct test, they are detected by max and are sent to the remote machines. actually the remote machines are using local copies of the textures, no need to open them in the same way as phoenix cache files.
so, just to be sure, you connect using remote desctop to arbitrary dr slave, open windows explorer on it, and type \\SASORI\PhoeniFDcache\subEauSplash\resim\ in the address bar. you claim the directory content is shown without any problems and password dialogs? you can see the cache files and can open them? the second one is very important, because sometimes windows can see the directory content but fails trying to open the files. to test the opening use right click, open with, and select notepad.

Yes that’s exactly what I did. I used windows remote desktop and i opened the cache with notepad. When I render on the network, I use unc path for my textures and they are not sent to be called locally on the slave.

really strange, ok i will tell you if we find the reason, hopefully today
