Physical camera Film gate question

Hi,

what does the second sentence means:

“Film gate - specifies the horizontal size of the film gate in milimeters. Note that this setting takes into account the system units configuration to produce the correct result.”

We want to reproduce a Sony F3 (sensor size 23.6 x 13.3 mm). When we set the film gate to 23.6 the perspective is not matching. The Maya units configuration is at default value (cm).

Do we need to set the system unit to mm?

Hi,
I usually use the film aperture for the sensor size. Be aware the value have to be in inches.
I don’t get the Film gate in the physical camera as there is only 1 dimension and sometime work with special camera that have specific sensor size.

When I set the aperture to 0.93 x 0.52 and then enable “Treat as VRay Physical Camera” the aperture settings jumps back to 1 x 1!?

You probably have to set the “specify FOV” to “From Maya Camera” and set your Focal length in the Camera attribute rather than in the physical cam.

Thanks, that seems to work. Doesn’t match exactly, but with the camera tools we can make it work.

You will also need to enter the proper lens focal length (the actual one, not converted to 35mm gate standard).

The scene was shot with an Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f3,5.

The 18mm apply to 36/35mm. Any idea how we can calculate the focal lenght for the smaller F3 sensor?

So to match a vray camera to a film sequence shot with the Sony F3 Super35 chip with a 28mm zeiss lens, you simply change the film gate of the vray camera to 23.6 and set the focal length to 28mm, right?
