presampling displacement issues

I have a scene i’m trying to render - it’s pretty simple. one light, one surface subdivided to hell, a vray displacement on top. I’m using the phoenix oceantex in the displacement and vector.

The issue is that it sits on presampling displacement and 5-10% cpu usage - while only using 3.1gb of ram. i have 64GB available in this machine. What is it about the presampling that is holding it up, and is there any way i can make it go faster?

Displacement settings are edge length 4px, max subdivisions 4. It takes 15 minutes to do a single bucket at full res - but it’s only using 5% of available ram and a max of 10% of my cpu.

Try turning off the “tight bounds” option in the VRayDisplacementMod modifier.

15-30% cpu usage!
edit: occasionally creeps up to 60 before dropping back to 15 & jumping around while climbing over the course of 20 seconds or so.

ha. I’ts not presampling anymore, just goes straight into rendering. ram usage climbs pretty quickly and it’s definitely faster. Not quick enough to be usable yet though  Think we may have to figure a different way to do this.

What is your dynamic memory limit set to, btw? Perhaps you can try raising it.

it’s set to 32gb…
the scene only used 2 when rendering. after turning off tight bounds it kept rising up to 7gb before i cancelled it.

Right, there was a trick to that; try setting the default V-Ray geometry type to “Static”; if that does not help, send us the scene to vray@chaosgroup.com and we’ll check it out.
