well the time has finally come to look at upgrading my sys. so the last place i left off was going from (4) 1080ti hybrids to (4) 3080ti hybrids. something seems a little strange when i recently started making sure my system could handle it. the strangeness is around PSU requirements.
i see plenty of references that 3080ti’s draw max power of 350watts. i see others that have done tests saying 500watts. (i wonder if the latter is a whole box/system which includes the single card).
i have 2 AX860 PSUs right now. so well if 350max power draw i should be covered fairly well. it might be close though. it could depend on OCing - which i don’t do much b/c i need the cards to last!
the 3080ti tops at 350 watts maximum, some 3rd party cards will come with higher power limit and a factor OC like MSI SuprimX or ROG Strix. These cards will exceed 400 Watts out of box, they come with higher specs as well
About the tests that show 500 watts per 3080ti or 3090, this is about one of 2 things. It is the total power consumption of the whole system, or it is a peak spike of wattage during full load
A 3090 or 3080ti will peak higher than 400 Watts occasionally in games, you shouldn’t worry about this much. Worst case scenario it might trigger Over Current Protection and the machine will turn off, again those spikes are mostly about games. Power Draw in games is much higher than GPU rendering
I think your 2 Power supplies should be fine, as long as you use native 8 pin cables for your cards. Don’t use 8 pins splitters
thanks! just needed confirmation b/c of all the different numbers out there. yeah and i want to be on the conservative side of things - my focus would be longevity and not worrying about frying something if i end up doing a 2 day animation.
i didn’t even look for a hardware sub-forum that’s great i’m gonna browse this all the time!
