My max always crashes when i try to render this image .
The error i get is:
The settings that are not default are:
Vray log doesn’t show anything weird, no errors, no warnings. On one machine it failed during lightcache pass, on the other midway through rendering the image after it calculated a lightcache and an irradiance pass. I’ve also tried rendering with QMC (that was my first choice), it failed sometime after rendering the lightcache.
I’m trying to render this in a little over 3000x2250.
Vray sun with physical cam, LWF, and the split-face block/brick walls are displaced.
sounds much like an out of memory error.
I can see displacement on the church.
That, combined with the high res, and high LC subdivs, might just tip the PCs.
The reason why some managed to get through is possibly due to those PCs having less stuff running in the background.

I figured it has something to do with memory, but… is there a way to fix it? Will i have to drop displacement all together, or can i simplify it somehow, because it’s basicaly a simple map, just giving a hight to the split-face block, without any bump details and stuff.
Also, i wouldn’t use the LC to those high settings, no matter the rez.
With a primary method which is accurate, you might get away with MUCH lower settings (1k, or thereabout).
Also, if the disp settings are wrong, that would just kill the memory occupation and crash the shot entirely.
A posting of the scene might be helpful (or of the important settings, like the displacement ones)
And to add to that, chance your clr threshold in your IRmap settings to 0.3… 0.2 would be killing your renders times.. and there isnt much noticable quality difference at all
Will share more info about the scene tommorow, but one thing is for sure, i have to use 3d displacement because of those corners, it’s been discussed in my other thread
I ran another render when i left the office, this time i switched to vray VFB and turned off ‘render to memory frame buffer’ or something like that. QMC+QMC and it came to around 1gb of memory usage. I’m really curious to see if it’ll crash.
This is driving me insane. I’ve managed to render one image to the vrimg file but it ended up with a really ugly artifact on one object. Click on the image to see the full res.
The wall on the smaller object has some ugly artifacts, and they reflected on the alpha mask as well.
So when i tried to render just the region with that wall in it, my max crashed showing a vray error.
So when took the object with the artifacts and saved it to a whole new file, it crashed again with the same message. The geometry seems ok, so i’ve no idea why the artifact happened in the first place. I really wonder how was i able to render it in the first place (albeit the artifact) and now it’s failing.

I’ll post the settings that i’ve used to render this out in about an hour. I’m concerned about the displacement artifacts that can be seen on the larger church.
Ditto for the displacement.
Just use a basic brick map to pull out the bricks, but avoid displacing the fine detail.
That can be faked confortably with a bumpmap/diffuse map on top, and few will ever notice the difference.
This is why I’ve pointed you to a thread with, I believe, a similar problem (the large rendering resolution). If, in addition, you have high-resolution textures, you can also turn ON the 3dsmax Bitmap pager. If you are still unable to deal with the issue, it would be helpful if you can provide the scene to us at vray@chaosgroup.com or vlado@chaosgroup.com for investigation of the problem.

That scene renders fine for me… well at 640x480.. rendering at your res now will post if it crashes.
Although im NOT saving to vrimg, and i had to put an output map under the vraysky and drop it to 0.01 which was blowing out the render and making it like ALOT slower, plus it was all white.
That may well have been what was causing that part of it to crash??
EDIT:
the 3200x2400 render just finished with no problems at all.. memory usage was around 1gb for the whole render.
