render elements documentation

Hi all,

I wanted to know if there is any more documentation regarding the render elements. I am keen to know more about the Light Select render element.

I have looked at the docs for 3d max and they contain a bit more information than the maya render elements docs but nothing on the above elements.

I search the forums but only found a post from quite a few months ago asking for more documentation on render elements and a post from Vlado about the Light Select render element when he was just implementing it. But not really detailed way of using it.

Many thanks,

Richard

Hi, Richard,

AFAIK, the RE_Light_Select let you extract the “direct” lighting contribution on a per-light basis. i.e. if you got a scene with a sphere and two lights, then the Beauty = RE_Light_Select one + RE_Light_Select_B + GI. Currently, the indirect lighting contribution cannot be isolated on a per-light basis. Actually, if you do a research on “light select” or multilight on all forums (not just the Maya ones), you should be able to find quite some discussions and requests regarding a Light_Select render element that can be used as Maxwell’s multi-light feature. Hope to see this coming in future releases of Vray.

To use it, simply create the RE_Light_Select (as many as you wish). The created RE_Light_Select will be shown in the outliner. Then drag the light(s) onto the RE_Light_Select you want it(them) to be associated with. Alternatively, you can associate the light(s) and RE_Light_Select through the set relationship editor. It’s pretty straight forward once you get a hang of it.

Btw, you can choose to only extract the diffuse or specular components of the RE_Light_Select.

cheers,
Jason

Thanks Jason for the info. Will try it out now.

Best,

Richard

this works really nicely and it works for geometry lights (VrayMeshLights) which is great.

is it possible to get this working for geometry that just has a lightMtl attached to it?

thanks,

rich

We added your request to our “to do” list.

I set this up (as described above in post 2) and it appears black in the VFB. What am I missing?

What kind of lights are you using?

Best regards,
Vlado

They were Maya directional lights.

I think directional lights were not supported in SP1. Get a nightly build.

Sorry to revive this thread on light select.
is suppose to only show the diffuse from the light? Could we also have the reflection.
I have a light on a side of a car, which doesn’t appear the lights on the car (which is made of chrome and glass) as it doesn’t have any diffuse.

Thanks,

Yannick

+1 on that request

Cheers,

Rich

Yep, this will be done.

Best regards,
Vlado

Excellent!
Thanks.
