Render Log

I’ll ask anyway. In video, I can record in log, and color grade in post using a LUT. Is there a way to do this for stills? Basically, a flat profile. Is this done with filmic tonemapping?

What’s the idea? You wish to load a still in the VFB and convert it to log space (or is it for a texture)?

EDIT: The VRayOCIO node has a mode called “LogConvert” (linear to log or log to linear) that can also be baked to LUT (via the button). Other color conversions are possible, too.

I will look into that. Thank you!

The left is video recorded in log, and the right is with a LUT. My understanding is that when you record video, you record in log so you can color grade in post. Now, for me, I do stills and was wondering why we don’t render in log? Essentially, when recording video, use a flat profile. You record with a high dynamic range, so all the info is there and you can pull it out in post with LUTS.

Because we render in linear floating point. This contains far more information than the finest camera on the market.

Log recording is a way to squeeze as much info into the 8, 10,12 or 14bits most cameras use by redistributing the luminance values.

Plenty of info on Log out there. Something like this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/video/tips-and-solutions/understanding-log-format-recording
