ok guys, this is an interior of a gift shop I’m working on - still a WIP.
the problem I’m having is very high - unusual render times:
for a 2000 wide still it took 19 HOURS to render on a dual Athlon mp 1900+ w/ 2 gigs of ram…waaaaay to long so I’d like to figure out why and reduce that.
the scene is pretty small only - 46,000 polys.
I have about 25 lights in the scene (all spots) and a couple geomentry lights (thin cylinders w/ a standard mat w/ and output map in the selfillumination channel - wrapped in a vraywrapper w/ GI generate set to 10).
I also have those filleted columns (the fillet was booleaned out w/ thin rectangles) -
so at first I thought that was the problem, because i thought the filleting was traping light rays - so I substitute them w/ simple boxes - but it’s still taking long time.
I also tried to hide the light objects (I know they usually add to render time) - still taking long…
I tried to render it at 640x480 w/ imap settings to min/max -4/-1 (the only difference between the high settings posted below for the 2000 pixel wide)…and it’s still taking about 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours to calc the imap.
btw, the only reflections are in the table/counter tops marble and they are not blurry, just straight.
do you think that filleted columns contribute much to these high render times?? if so, what could be a solution?? - they need to stay since the client wants them in.
EDIT: I also use f-edge plugin by chaos to round off the edges of the counter you see upfrount and round display tables in the middle - I don’t knof if that’s cousing it…
do u hv anything else there with reflections? or refractions? besides the marble countertop? or the glass shelves? try to to turn them off to see if that will speed up ur renderign time. If this is for a still shot. u can probably use a max material instead…rather than a Vray reflection…reflect/refract takes forever.
achin - i tried turning off reflections all together - and the times have gone done a bit - but it’s stilll takin a long time (maybe 1 hour to 1 and 1/2 hours for the 1map for a 640x480 w/ min/max at -4/-1)

the lights have falloff and attenuation but I never had problems w/ that.
anyway - I don’t know what else, so here’s the file and maps - I also included the demo of f-edge plug (put in your “plugins” directory if you don’t have it - or don’t worry about it)
the file is heavy - about 10MBs w/ maps included:
dont want to seem negative but you could use 3dsmax 5 or viz radiosity to calculate indirect lighting and on your machine it should not take more that 30 min for the full solution.
my point is you would achieve the same quality only in a fraction of the time.
If you want to make your render look like say those of Goncalo’s youll need to ask his help.

my point is trying to improve constatly - that’s why I’m usung vray in first place…I’d appreciate if you had some constructive help, otherwise…don’t bother.
don’t get me wrong - all I meant is that I’d like some critism that would help me improve what I have with vray rather then just pick up and go use something else like max radiosity. that’s all. didn’t mean to come off the wrong tangent.

I will - I’ll pray to the cpu Gods to go faster!!!..hehehe…I’ll have to make up a rendering dance to please the rendering GODS…
anyway - I’ve been rendering in an addictive mode- started w/ just the walls/floor/ceiling - and progressively add small piece back in the scene and render - so I got most pieces back (glass shelfs missing still) and I’ve been getting about 16 min renderings for a 640x480 w/out AA…
which is better then over 2 hours from before w/ the same res…will see, hopefully I’ll find the coulprit…
Can you post the scene in Max 4 format? This sounds like a good challenge, to explore speed tweaks. I only have Viz 4. Who knows? Maybe we can get under 3 minutes.
Your scene have 3 major things that slows down everything
1- Did you ever try to setup a small scene with 20 lights with Vraysoftshadows? It will be ever slow if you use them like this… worth with 8 subdivisions, you can try to use only 3 and reduce the light size but… still slow. better with shadow maps or vray standart shadows
2- Very strong multipliers for the lights without fallof square attenuation…
3- You are forcing to much the object lights with very high multipliers too, and better to use a black diffuse color instead to avoid them to be included in the irradiance map process

do you mean the inverse square decay in the lights?? I am using manual attenuation controls to achieve a similar thing but w/ more control…is that similar to the decay??
this is the modified scene, with correct decay on ligthing (inverse square)

I’ve also replaced the self lighting geometry, there is vray light instead.

is there any way you could post a max/viz 4 version? reason is I’m at work right now till tonight (my time) and we use viz 4 here - I only have max 5 at home…
I considered using vraylights instead of object lights in the beginning but it seemed that they took longer then object lights…I’m courious to see your setup
yes they took longer in a way, but even if u use low setting for GI calculation the shadows will look very beautiful (wouldnt with objlight) . So summa summarium, it might be faster.
