After many years in the traditional architectural profession I am considering taking the plunge in the exciting, live by the seat of your pants life of the the freelance illustrator. Actually I have been doing arch. illustrations for my firm for about 5 years. That part has been great, it’s just all the other BS that I have to do that I’m getting tired of. And I’d like to work on more diverse projects types.
So I would really appreciate advice from any of you who have already taken the plunge. Thanks.
I’m in the same boat as you are. I graduated Arch. school in '97 and started working in the profession in '95. I began the 3D thing when I made the jump from small firm to corporate firm. There was no one there doing it so I saw it as a golden oppurtunity. I’ve been there for 5 years now (Pigeon holed) and I know how you feel. I freelance on the side, after work and on the weekend. With freelance it’s either feast or famine and I’m just hesitant to go off on my own w/o a day job. It’s like Natty said…advertise…it takes a good year or two to get your name out so from my stand point I’d keep the day job until your business can stand on it’s own.
