sibenik... again :-)

Hello, I’ve been working on improving VRay’s GI algorithms lately (among many other things); here are some interesting results. Calculation of GI for the first image is 1 minute 26 seconds, and for the second one - about 4 minutes (on Athlon 1800+, NOT multithreaded at the moment). There are no lights in the scene, just pure skylight…

Best regards,
Vlado

what’s the cause for such a big time difference??..how is it improved?

paul.

Wow, looks like it is really bouncing around in there!

Impressive time !!!

I notice this is for the gi calculation and what about the render time ?
Do you work on it in the same way to decrease time rendering ?

When do you eat ? sleep ? render time is too fast now for you to have a rest ?

Congrats !
Gael

good to hear, that the GI algorithms are also in progress.
i’m wondering how the rendertimes were improved against the actual version of vray. is it a matter of speed that was improved or another aspect, i.e. more accurate light solution…

You might want to look at this in comparison:

It probably cannot be directly compared since no lights other than skylight is involved as vlado stated but still quite fast, especially considering that there was no multithreading enabled.
Machine specs are the same (Athlon 1800)

Stefan

When will it be available?

To sk_fly

This is not a question to ask !!

Wait for max 7 or 8
ah ah ah !!

For me I return on max 5 because I loose too much time in rendering
on max6 with vray.
But I do like Vray that one day will be a reference, I’m sure of it.

We must leave them working…

Bye !

Gael

@galf: why do you loose more time with max6 and vray? is there a difference between max6 and 5? would you explain what you mean…

2 Vlado:
it’s nice that you’re back to GI
the time you got is great, but the results IMO aren’t practical
too rough and noisy

tony: lighting an interior scene from just skylight will always look kinda noise unless your willing to wait forever. but it looks better then what ive seen in the past. keep it up vlado!

maxxer: I think he was talking about not being able to use distributed rendering in max 6.x

-dave

i think this is great…cant wait till the vray 1.1…

2percydaman: i know that
don’t get me wrong i realize that it’s just a test and i wasn’t trying to discourage Vlado from trying new things
i’m all up for it just like most ppl here

the key word in my post was “practical”
it’s great that it only took 4 minutes
but does it look like a finished rendering worth showing to a client?

while the point was- if the “new” stuff works how long would it take to get the same scene to look finished?

the point was of the 4 minute rendering going down to a minute long (bottom vs top image)…

that is pretty practical, considering it means 4x the speed of all gi…???

i think the first one is actually better than the sec. one…even tho it takes less time (which is a good thing  )…i am not gonna explain in full detail why i think its better cuz i am runnin out of time…generally the first one is more realistic…

To theMaxxer

I just loose time in rendering under max6 because there is no
distribution rendering implemented yet in Vray.
So on large images it’s too much long to compute…
DR works on max5 so, I have no choice, I must stay on max5.

I work a lot in architecture and max6 is better for me to achieve
some projects.Nevertheless I can do the same in max5 but it’s a bit
longer to prepare.

Bye
Gael

Hello Vlado
I am user of VRAY and I am very glad to see some new GI improvement of VRAY(I am suprised because of it’s velocity).
However several months ago I posted with some other users of the forum, that we need to be able to output layers more easily(a gi output like FR, or an ambient occlusion pass, a reflection pass , a z-buffer pass,…)
http://www.chaoticdimension.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2409

but I did not see any update. I am sorry but the vray G-buffer slot didn’t help me a lot

Then I would like to know if you intend to take into account our needs or if you set up the heading “wishlist” on your forum just to decorate

thank you to answer me

ps:sorry for my english

Vlado

hi vlado

you are saying you’re working on a ‘render elements’-feature?
cool, that’s great!
