I get an error when importing a model from SU 2016. I can save as an older version, but I need to export, which gets me control over layers and materials.

whoever send you the sketchup files tell them to always save as version 7, its the only version 3ds max imports without problems

Normally there is no need for SU. Max can import skp files directly.
