Square Artifacts - Is this from adaptive sampling? How do I avoid this?

What causes these square artifacts? Is this from some type of adaptive sampling of an HDRI / Dome Light? First image shows the sample rate RE, second image is the RGB.

In this particular example I don’t see them much in the RGB composite, but in other renderings it can become very distracting.

I’ll see if I can find some previous projects where these artifacts were much more obvious.

do those rectangles line up with either the buckets in your render, or the geometry segments of the wall?

Best you send the scene (simplified if possible while still exhibiting the artifacts) so we can troubleshoot.

Sent a stripped down scene via the link provided. It’s barely noticeable, but the sample rate RE shows the artifacts I’m referring to above the doorway on the flat part of the wall. Again this is pretty subtle in this particular scene, but in others with more complex lighting, it can be very noticeable. I think it has to do with the “Adaptive Lights” optimization because turning that off sometimes fixes it.

Negative, only using progressive and never buckets. Also no geometry on the wall there, its a flat plane.

Scene received. I’ll forward it to my SketchUp colleagues. They’ll investigate and report here.

Hi Charles,

I was able to test the scene extensively on our side and narrow down the cause of the artifacts.

After simplifying the scene and testing different configurations, including replacing the scene lights, materials, and reducing the scene to the bare minimum, I found that the artifacts are caused by the geometry of the dome/light fixtures.

In particular, the way these fixtures are modeled appears to cause the light to refract in a way that produces the square patterns visible in the Sample Rate render element. When we remove the fixture geometry from the scene, the artifacts disappear and the rendering behaves as expected.

I also tested replacing the materials and lights, but the issue consistently came back when the dome fixture geometry was present. This indicates that the artifacts are specific to the geometry in this scene rather than being caused by Adaptive Sampling itself or a V-Ray bug.

wow, that was not on my bingo card, haha!

Wow!

How bizarre! Thanks for narrowing that down. I’ll have to dig into some other projects I’ve seen this pop up in before and check if I have similar light geometry.

Any suggestions or theories why this geometry would cause that? Not enough polygons? Too thick/thin? Too uniform?
