substitute modifier on vray meshes

edit:

the topic title should have been “vray meshes as substitutes”. the other way around it doesn´t make much sense.

/edit

Sometimes handling many vray proxies of heavy geometry can be a really tedious task.

It would be really nice if one could use a substitute modifier to choose a even more reduced mesh for viewport purposes. Right now it’s impossible (or at least I´m not able) to choose a vray mesh as a substitute object.

Implementing this doesn´t seem too hard from a non-programmers’s perspective.

Ooh… this could be really nifty.

Combustion does something similar with a “switcher” modifier.

I could see this being really useful when you are working with animated trees, but want to have a low-poly proxy be in the viewport when you’re not working on it.

Perhaps the Level Of Detail tools in Max could be used to this end? I’ve never tried them.
