Tips for making realistic clear epoxy resin materials?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a small product visualization that includes a clear epoxy resin finish, and I’m trying to make the material look a bit more convincing.

At the moment it still feels a little too “perfect.” Real epoxy usually has subtle edge darkening, slight surface imperfections, tiny bubbles here and there, and different reflections depending on the thickness.

I’m curious how you usually approach this.

Do you rely mostly on IOR and roughness variation?
Do you add micro scratches or imperfections even for a polished finish?
Is it better to fake tiny bubbles with textures, or actually model a few if they’re close to the camera?

I’d really appreciate seeing any workflow tips or examples if you’re willing to share.

Thanks!

It’s always a good idea to add some of your reference images to get a better idea of your objective, as any solution could depend on a specific approach, rather than anything general
