VRay 3.5 bump problem

Hi,

I made very simple scene just to test something, but I found this bug. I thought bump in VRay 3.5 will be without any problem. But the sharp edge is terrible, cant use that. Can somebody correct it or where is a problem?

Sending scene in zip file.

Thank you

Hello, anybody? Or is this normal result?

We have not made any changes to the actual bump mapping yet. I did show some experiments, but they need more careful research before going into production. I’m planning to look into that more seriously for 3.6

Best regards,
Vlado

Would using a vrayhdri map and setting it to elliptical filtering help?

No, it’s not a filtering issue and has nothing to do with the particular texture used for bump.

Best regards,
Vlado

I’ve been able to reproduce this in 3.40.01. Either having the bump set high, like 100 for example, or turning the blur down to 0.01 gets similar results to this.

I set bump for 30 or so and didnt change filtering if I remember correctly.

guys will this be fixed for 3.6?

I hope to get to it.

Best regards,
Vlado

I ran into a similar issue in Maya. There the issue was actually with the subdivision surface that is built into Maya (when used in combination with a high frequency bump map). Adding a Vray subdivision surface attribute to the geometry fixed it. You might give that a try here.

Its still a problem in latest nightly :frowning:

What about this problem in vray 4?

i am also interested if this is taken care of in upcoming release

Does the solution for this problem come with V-Ray Next?

It is a comparison with arnold.
It seems that arnold is taking measures

This problem has been debated from long long time ago. Why is V-Ray still not solving the problem now?

V-Ray… ummm

:frowning: hope there is a fix on the way

How this looks in corona? Is there any problem?

Vray’s bump (and normals imo) have been rooted for ages. One of the many reasons I now use corona. Corona’s bump mapping looks so good and is borderline a replacement for fine-detailed 2D displacement.

Edit: attached corona’s take on the situation.
