Vray and Mash instances

Do Vray object property groups work with Mash network in instance mode? I have a few Mash networks doing things around each other, and I need to control visibility for render layers, whole still shadowing etc…all the usual stuff…but I cant seem to get this working.

It’s been a while for me since I did this in maya, but no I don’t think it works with instances. It needs to be real geometry which is being instanced + instancer in the vray obj prop node for this to work.

Thats a shame…thanks for the insight. When using Vray Proxies in the hundreds, I need to use instances, since they arent a mesh…but then I lose so much render output control since Object properties dont work.

Use mesh instead and turn your proxy screen view to wireframe.

Well you can just put your vray proxies (the one’s that are being instanced) into obj prop set. Its a limitation if you have specific scatters for specific proxies then they are mixed etc etc.

Yeh Im doing exactly that…I have about 8 cars that all have mixed paints and different geo…they all have to be moving in groups, but colours mixed together…so I need to control for about different groups of cars, hundreds of cars in total…but Id want to render group 1-4 separately whilst they still affect each other. Perhaps I could have built the system with a set of 8 car proxies for each group…rather than using one group…and add those groups of vray proxies to Vray obj props…that might have been useful if Id known this wouldnt work..oh well, deadline tomorrow! Got to go with the flow now!

I dont think MASH accepts vray proxies at all…it doesnt build a network.

This is made from MASH instances

Works fine on my end (check video). But maybe I don’t understand the whole picture. Send the scene + proxy so I can troubleshoot.

Sorry, there seems to be some confusion…Hermit I havnt had time to check your scene yet, but I will asap…Stezza, I meant to say, MASH needs mesh inputs, and Vray Proxies arent mesh inputs. I have to create an instance network, not a mesh notwork, and it seems, to me so far, that Vray Object proeprties dont like when a MASH network is an instance network.

Stezza, what you have is basically already what Im working with…what Im trying to do now, is for example, say you have a wave of cars jumping over the top of the ground cars…and you want to only have the ground cars be visible in render, but you want them shadowed still by the jumping cars. I cant split my mash instance networks into Vray Object prop groups to isloate things. I havnt yet tried render mask mode…but that would give me cutout renders…Id rather not have that.

ok, Hermit I saw yours was just a vid, so I checked that out…does seem your scene is working with instance networks and letting you control with object props. Ill need to see why my car proxies are not behaving in a simple scene.

So, after testing, I cant get it to work. Hermit, what I think youve got happening is, you have the proxies assigned to the vray object prop, so thats passed through the mash network…that also works for me. My issue is, Ive been using the same dozen proxies for several mash networks. So in my system, I need to be able to assign the instancer node to the vray object prop which doesnt work.

In the image attached, I need to switch off the top group for exmanple, but keep the shadows / reflection on bottom group. Unless I assign the proxies themsevles to the vray obj prop, I cant control them. If I do assign them, because Ive used the same proxies in the bottom row, they all dissapear if I turn off primary vis in the object prop.

The solution would be, as I think I mentioned above, to use a different proxy group / set, for each mash network.

This should work.
