Hope someone can shed some light on my problem. I seem to be getting some lines/shaded areas which almost look like they’re being stretched (see attachments) when applying a displacement mod to the geometry. I’ve tried various approaches to try and remedy this but don’t seem to be able to fix it. I’ve tried re-modelling the areas with the issues and no change, I’ve tried to get the geometry as clean as possible thinking it might be that the displace mod might be sensitive to bad geometry. I’ve also tried smoothing groups and no change, tried a different material in the texmap slot and still the problem is there.
I’m currently using Max 2013 and Vray 2.50.01 if that helps.
Has anyone experienced this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the fast response Tricky, I tried the “subdivide” modifier and it worked a treat, thank you. I have also attached a copy of the settings I’m using, does anything look wrong as its the first time I’m using a vray displace mod for brick work.
No idea what your system units are but 0.01 seems very little to no displacement almost. I would suggest you go higher according to your system units. Also in this case I would fill in a negative of that same value in the shift amount.
Also are you using walls & tiles for this? If you are there’s a button that does the displacement more or less automatically if I recall correctly.
I’m no expert in displacement myself having had mixed success, but that looks OK to me. You might be able to reduce the subdivs down quite a bit given that you are already subdividing your mesh with the subdivide modifier.
Well I’m working in cm by default, so to me it seemed too little. Working in meters sounds like a huge PIA because of the ‘dot or comma’ you have to type everytime you need to fill in a value
The 256 subdivs are only a maximum to reach the edge length of 4 pixels in this case (correct me if I’m wrong) so lowering this won’t have any affect if 4 pixels edge length is reached before the maximum subdivision.
Yes I’m using Walls & Tiles and the displacement is what has been generated from Walls & Tiles itself so I haven’t really changed anything. I think my units set up is different to yours hence the difference in amounts.
You have more knowledge than me so anything is a bonus, I’ll try a reduction in subdivs to see if that might help too. Thanks again for your help, just had a quick nosey at your site, some cracking work you’ve produced, hope to get to that level very soon!
Just change the working units to ‘mm’ or ‘cm’. Working in ‘m’ helps with accuracy in huge scenes and is a more logical unit (to my mind anyway) for architecture than ‘cm’. Having said that, our normal display unit is ‘mm’ - my brain works in ‘m’, ‘mm’ or sometimes ‘inches’ depending on the size of object I am thinking about.
As a side note to what was mentioned about setting the display units to whatever suits you while system units are meters, you can at any time type in a unit type in any spinner.
I always work in meters, and often work with landscaping stuff, so my display units are often set to meters, but when doing details, I would for example just type in “2,5cm” in a spinner to get the correct amount in what ever units is used.
If my reference material describes an object in american imperial units, I just type it as inches etc.
3dsmax in kinda unique in this regard. Not may other 3d programs out there let you do this.
