Workstation Build Advice – with Future AI and Realtime Rendering in Mind

Hey everyone,

I’d love to hear your thoughts and get some input on a new PC build I’m currently planning.

I’m working on medium-complexity design and visualization projects, and my workflow is split roughly 50/50 between Rhino + Grasshopper and 3ds Max, with Corona Renderer as my main visualization tool for design and architectural work.

I also do some light post-production in Photoshop and DaVinci Resolve.
As new AI-based tools (like image enhancement or image-to-video conversion) and real-time rendering solutions (such as Vantage) are starting to influence architectural workflows, I’d like to build a well-balanced and future-proof system that can handle both traditional CPU-based rendering and GPU-intensive processes efficiently.

I’m not a hardware expert — more of a “dangerous half-knowledge” type :sweat_smile: — so I’m hoping to get some solid, experience-based advice before finalizing my build.

From what I’ve gathered so far, Corona (as a CPU renderer) primarily benefits from the best possible CPU and plenty of RAM.
However, that perspective seems a bit limited to CPU rendering only, and I’m looking for something that also holds up as workflows evolve — especially with AI-assisted tools, real-time visualization, and GPU-accelerated tasks becoming more common.

Questions I’ve been asking myself:

AMD or Intel?

If AMD – are there still any issues (BIOS, drivers, Windows, RAM)?

Ryzen or Threadripper – when does the upgrade make sense?

Ideal RAM speed and configuration (2 vs. 4 sticks)?

How much VRAM would make sense for my use case?

AIO or air cooling?

RTX GPU – which brands are recommended or should be avoided (fan noise, coil whine)?

What’s a reasonable budget for a capable, future-proof workstation for medium-scale projects?

Will my proposed setup deliver an efficient workflow today and in the near future?

Initial configuration (put together with a local PC shop – mainly gaming-focused):

I know this is a complex topic and that personal preferences play a big role,
but I’d really appreciate any objective advice, technical insights, or real-world feedback — especially from those working with similar software combinations or shifting toward AI and GPU-enhanced workflows.

I’ve been building something similar. It’s still in pieces and all things are not ordered yet. But after some reading and senseless amounts of youtube reviews I’ve come to some conclusions. But take this with a grain of salt, there’s people that know this way better than me, I’m mostly replying because this place is so dead now, and I’ve also got hardware questions sitting without replies.

As far as CPU goes AMD 9950x seems like the way to go. Intel seems to run very hot and AMD seems to win most benchmarks. I’d move up to threadripper if I had extreme CPU rendering needs, could sacrifice performance in single core tasks(?), and was prepared to spend not just more money on the CPU, but also on everything else involved that also needs to scale up. Btw, I’ve seen some tests saying that like the 7950x is cheaper and the performance difference is small compared to 9950x. If you want to save a few pennies.

RAM, it seems like 2 rams sticks is the wise choice! Unless you move up to threadrippers and stuff like that, that has more memory channels.

Cooling. I’ve read so much here. You will find people saying you can cool it with a big tower cooler like the Noctua NH-D15 G2, and also under volt. Air cooler will be the simplest and most reliable long term. But it will have to work harder and possibly make more noise. A lot of sources seem to think an AIO (360mm) is necessary for a 9950x, at least if you plan to render on it, and maxs out all cores for long periods of time. I was also dead set on the same cooler, Arctic LF III pro 360. But I really think you should read this thread and watch the hardware canucks review:

It seems that for 9950x the LF III 360 might be ok, but there are better options.

PSU: I’m kind of wondering if 850w is enough? As in, I’m not saying it will be not enough, but that is something I’d tripple check if I was you. For CPUs like that and newer better GPUs I see 9/10 ten posts so you need 1000w to be safe. But then 2/10 say 850w will be fine, and I would disregard those posts if it wasn’t for the fact that they seem to always come from someone who has an air of actually knowing what they are talking about.

Everything is sound in your build. With your memory make sure you buy it as single 128GB kit (2x64), and not two 64GB packages, you will increase your chances it will boot the EXPO profile right away with no tinkering.

I recently build identical PC so here are few of my quick notes:

Whether you air-cool or AIO won’t matter much, 9950X is dense chip and problem is transfer to heat-sink so even best AIO on market like Arctic will no perform to its potential. That’s ok. Pick your poison, everything will work.

850W will suffice, but it’s always better to just go to 1000W because of transient spikes (GPU occasionally eating up to 2x as power for moment, possibly triggering the PSU’s protections). It has many other benefits, such as PSU often running passively up to 50perc. load, making your PC more silent (PSU often have smaller industrial fans which can be annoying in sound profile).

I am not happy about choice of budget PSU like Supremo (made by budget OEM called SAMA), if this is your workstation, always pick 1-tier (Seasonic, upper-models from Corsair, SuperFlow, etc..). It will be best spent additional 100 Euro for many years. It’s like insurance.

So what did you end up using, if you don’t mind me asking? I got a Noctua NH-D15 G2 and changed my mind and returned it before even opening it, thinking I need an AIO for long renders and to hopefully to keep the noise down. But I’m thinking that both options would be quite silent in idle, and the Noctua the better option for idle and light workloads. And both would still make some noise when doing long renders, and maybe the noctua would struggle.
I did how ever get a thermal grizzly kryosheet hoping to help the heat transfer as best I can without doing crazy delidding stuff.

I’m looking at a similar build, definitely following this.

Juraj - Did Max\Slate get any more responsive with a 9950x over old threadrippers like the 3990 or 3970x which I think you used to run (and which I currently run)? Just wondering if you had any ‘wow’ moments with the 9950x. Cheers and cool looking build!

Wow that’s a clean build :smiley: I wouldn’t have thought of going micro-atx (?) but boy is that clean and compact. Tempting to look into that mobo size especially if the GPU was blower\smaller like that. I’d be very curious what your experience is once you finally install Max etc!

That is just Mini-ITX because it allowed better PSU position in this small case. Mini-ITX has just 2 memory slots and I only put 2x48GB = 96GB for this build, quite enough, not sure why I didn’t do 2x64 GB :- ) I mustn’t have noticed them on market lol.
But Micro-ATX is better for full workstation, funnily there are almost no such boards and they are of lower quality than Mini-ITX which is very popular.

Just for interest, the 9950X is what I went for and is what I work on now, works rather nicely. It was a prebuilt and for reasons of packages, it’s water cooled and has 196 GB of RAM (!) though the latter is not a recommendation lol, I’d have gone with less if it was an option. It is also a 5070, non-Ti version, and that seems fine too.

just to benefit others who read the forum (I’ve answered OP in PM about questions).

I’m really liking my 9950x3d build. At work I have a 3990x threadripper that indeed is faster in render times, but the difference in max UI and overall “snappiness” of my new build at home is big. Loving the 9950x3d. Now 80% of this performance might also be tied into the PC at work as a lot of things mapped to our network there, were as at home I’m 100% on local nvme’s. It’s blazing fast and such a joy to use. While render times are faster at work for big scenes, I found the image filter “tent” + Intel denoise trick gives me great 4000px images in 10-30mins depending on exterior/interior. So I don’t really see a need for faster cpu than this.

But I find slate editor on the 9950x3d great. Where it does indeed hang a bit on the 3990x at work (again, probably also network assets is a big deal).

For ram I searched a lot on reddit and found some that had luck with 4x48gb sticks in 870x boards, so I went for it. While it booted fine I was not able to run expo or tweak them to run faster than 2600-3000mhz. This was back in april. I just updated my bios (asus pro-art) and now I can run expo on them without issues. So all good here.

Cooling wise I went with the Phantom Spirit 120SE. I was considering Noctua’s new one, but after many reviews I saw that the 3rd of a price Phantom Spirit was performing the same, so thought why not? It keeps my 9950x3d at around 76degrees under full load rendering and noise is fine. I do get a ramp up on fans for 2-3sec when I click “render”, but then it stabilizes and is quite comfortable. This is with a “silent” fan profile via bios.

I went with a good corsair 1300w PSU so I could upgrade my old 4060ti later on if I felt a need to do more local AI stuff.

Case: Be quiet Air Flow something. Lovely and compact, but should still be able to fit a 5090 in the future.

Thanks Tom and Jens! That’s fantastic information. Did you go with the x3d just for better binning or did you have thoughts on the greater cache helping with max’s responsiveness? The cost difference isn’t so big.

My question originates from the fact that I need to grow my farm but also need a snappier PC. Currently the ‘farm’ is (2) 3990x’s and my workstation is a 3970x. Right now my two paths forward are: Build a 9950x for workstation and build a 9980x for the farm OR build only a 9980x and it joins the farm overnight. The farm isn’t always in use and this would be acceptable if the 9980x gave me the kind of boost you’re seeing with the 9950x. Unfortunately I have this feeling in the pit of my stomach that threadrippers have been slowing down my UI for years and there’s something about the high thread count that makes things worse for day-to-day activities…not to mention the lower single core max speed as compared to the 9950x. I can’t find the post now but I remember a dev elsewhere on the chaos forums saying avoid even modern threadrippers if UI snappiness is the true goal and he recommended a 9950x I think.

Re 9950 vs 9980 I think we are at a point, that if you only do still renders 80% of the time, the 7-8x price cost vs the 2-3x performance gain, doesn’t make sense. If you do a lot of animations that might be a different thing, but still, I wonder if even in the long run it’s not cheaper and faster to use a render farm and make sure you factor in the cost towards client when pricing.

Maybe I always look at the most expensive render farms, but for me it never penciled out. And, yes, we do a lot of larger image sets and a handful of animations each year, so having the 3990’s in the background churning along has more than paid for themselves over the years. The 9980x would just be an incremental addition to it and I’d go another 3-5 years without an upgrade to the ‘farm’. Lots of times our clients are on the edge of whether they can afford an animation in addition to still imagery or not, so for me to be able to reduce their cost by not doing an online farm they usually are OK with it taking a little longer using just my 2-3 machines. I explain the cost\benefit trade-off and schedule early on.

I still wonder if the 9980x would be a suitable workstation. Something tells me the crazy thread count is still an issue for snappiness but I may be off base.

Rendering farms were such a hassle, even the easiest ones like Rebus with collecting plugin. Also poor value, but that was at time where Xeons had stratosferic prices.

Alright so I installed the Ryzen 9950X (btw, reason I didn’t go for 3XD was that the non-version was barely 500 euro, just super-cheap) and it does appear very smooth and nice.

Sweeeeeet :smiley: Gotta get one built. And yeah render farms just never made sense for me but everyone is in a different position.

Which model of the RTX 5000 did you do? 16gb? Reconditioned?

I had that one for years (yes 16GB ram, it was only 16GB card many years ago that was affordable) so I just used it. I swapped 5070ti into my main workstation (so I can play a bit of new games here and there) and surprise! The non-Quadro is actually behaving worse :- ). It’s slower in pure wireframe display and has very inferior antialising regardless of any windows override settings. Non-wireframe it’s smooth it’s not FPS problem but yeah, looks like the Quadro and its driver is still better acting that GeForce Studio Driver.

Wow interesting! Ever since Nitrous the narrative always was a gaming card would be faster, interesting to hear otherwise. I do recall reading somewhere (forest pack docs?) that quadros are faster at displaying any kind of point clouds in max. I had been eying 5090’s just for the vram but your experience makes me wonder about a 24gb a5000 or similar. Lots of used/refurbished ones around for not unreasonable prices it seems…

I was the one always saying to never waste money on Quadro since Nitrous is pure Directx11 wrapper :- D Even did some tests back when Nitrous came.

So color me surprised when I opened 3dsMax, and when you use classic native 3dsMax physical Camera with both DOF preview and Vertical shift, it will give you that artifact where it skews back and forth.
And during that, the anti-aliasing was so horrible it looked like the lines were 10px wide and dotted. I checked nVidia control overrides but there was no difference of any sort. The studio driver and the quadro driver still acted different.
And the performance with pure wire-frame was noticeably worse as well. I almost never use it, but I have some massive datasets (engineering STEP files) when I could clearly see it was not the same.

Now the GeForce card performance is perfectly satisfying, but still, I was surprised :- ).

That’s pretty interesting, thanks for the information! I just pulled the trigger on a 24gb 4500 Ada based partially on your experience and also my own looking around. Still less money than a 5090, hopefully can still run topaz video ai and postshot well, more manageable power and heat, and fingers crossed for better viewport experience like you experienced. Will see! I’ll plop it into my 3970x for now and then ultimately put it in my new 9950x\9980x build soon assuming it performs well. Haven’t upgraded anything except my network infrastructure (went to unifi) in several years so it was time for some new hw :smiley:

As im sure you are aware you built at the right time. I built around this time as well, knowing that ai was going to wipe out high end supplies. I might not have known what I was going to do with the powerhouse I built, but I did know I wanted 1. I finished just in time. Ddr4 ecc ram is 4x more than I paid. Ssd are 4xs the price too
