  • Weekly interior No.3

    Hey guys,
well, kind of, as i did not keep my promise to upload one every week. But we were just so busy that i could do much on the forum apart from general chats Sorry for that, i will try to correct this inexcusable behavior ...so here is on for the 2nd week in January 2019.
Its a project for presentation of cladding, door systems and stairs. We were asked by the client to produce a darker interior with neutral surrounding nature. We ended up with using cloudy neutral HDRI sky dome and with a little help of aerial perspective. We wanted to achieve overexposed overcast skies outside so its just the detuned greens from the trees and the interior.
    Hope you like the output!
Thanks for any C and Cs!

Thanks Jiri, those are only "mood lights". Client wanted them on. There is a very faint glow on if if you have a look on the hires. I tried to bump up the values of its multiplier to get some effect on the interior but there is so much light comming in from the outside that to make it affect the object i woudl have to put in some very ridiculous values. Therefore i left standard values on and gave it a slight glow just for artistic purposes, otherwise it shoudl not be there realy if we are speaking about "making it real" you know the deal .......anyway, point taken! (hope you were talking about the ceiling light in the dining room??

Yeah, you right, on some images glow is visible. I opened fifth picture from first message, on this picture white circle looks little bit odd. I know outside is bright much more. Maybe some reflections or something on bulb will help. Otherwise all images looks great.

These are very nice - very neutral lighting which I envy to be honest as my interiors are often of commercial offices so I often have to struggle to get mine looking as though naturally lit as often they almost always aren't.

May I ask, are these interiors your own designs ? Or is this scheme (layout and furniture spec) provided to you by the client ? (my clients often tell me exactly what they want)

And is your background in Interior Design ?

              Great work, well done !

                hi Jez,
yes these are our designs. We have a client who gives us almost absolute freedom over presenting their products. Its very rare . we are not interior designers by occupation, were interior design geeks ..-i guess that may be the right word for us ))))
                glad you like it!

Even more impressive, which in my opinion makes you every bit Interior Designers ! (more so than some pro interior designers I know). Choosing fabrics, furniture, interpreting a brief etc etc etc is very much a skill above and beyond being just a 3d Visualiser. Again, well done, I take my hat off to you

                    Thank you Jez much appreciated!

There was t too much about the lighting to be honest just a single hdri from cgsource. Worked very well. again in this project we discovered how important it is to balance the power od the light and exposure of the camera. Quite critical especially when there needs to be some contrast.

setting up materials made me think about my rgb values spread. Mainly because this was the first time we used vrayscanned materials. We used it on the black leather armchairs. Although i thought i had my scene balanced well with blacks around 10, the very black vray scanned leather was turning out quite gray.

here, i would really love to ask Vlado or someone in charge of the scans, what the albedo of the black leathers generally is. I think it will be somewhere between 20-25.

if i were to use theis level of blacks accross the scene, i would have to introduce quite heavy contrast curve for the blacks in post plus finetuned filmic roll off.

i think i am pretty happy with my spreads but this gor me really wanting to do some testing when i get a chance and free time.

Hi Martin, that's a really nice set of images! Do you use Dome light as invisible and do your backgrounds in post? BTW, how do you like vrayscans so far?
                      Best regards

Hi Voltron, thanks. With this piece i ve got one hdri light set to invisible and i have backplate cards directly inside max set not to be visible by gi but visible to reflection and refraction. I also use selfilumination map with various multipliers as i find fit. Bitmap for illumination is an instance of diffuse and on top i use color correction map. This way i have dull freedom over the exposure outside and i dont have to comp anything.

sometimes i use one hdri light for everything. And sometimes i use one hdri light for light and one for reflections and background.

we had to start using the backplate appoach especially because when we use clipping, the dome light background gets chopped off. Seems like this bug hasnt been still removed. Well not a bug actually but more like a lack of functuonality when clipping.

when it comes to vray scans. Well, i have to say i love the materials. Really!
it has one huge disadvantage. Its very automotive. I would appreciate more translucent materials. Perhaps some leaves, grass blades, papers etc.
                        Love the workflow. So simple.

                          Hi Martin,
Well, they came out really nice! Thanks for the information, I do a similar thing for some interiors. I might still wait on the scans, but they do seem quite useful. I don't do any automotive stuff, so...
