  • The Phoenix Comic

Here's a couple of animations I made last year to promote the brilliant weekly kids' comic, The Phoenix.

I had complete free reign to come up with what ever concepts I wanted, which was a lot of fun, although obviously there were elements the client needed (mainly the type) so that it wasn't just a random thing some idiot had made (hello!)

    #1 Experiment

I used marvellous designer to simulate the cloth in this one, although some of the transitions had to be sculpted in ZBrush to make them look the way I wanted. The mouth came at the very last minute, so I think it could have done with a bit more work.

    #2 The Kid

Accidentally came up with a concept that had a load of characters in - whoops! Animated the whole thing on stepped keys, pretty much frame by frame (mostly on twos - which helped!). I've got in the habit of doing this lately and I really like it. Obviously it means no motion blur and it can be a headache sometimes, but I like the almost stop motion look it gives. Plus it's really easy to chop and change things around.

I did the sound for both as well and I'm very aware that I lack a lot of skill in this department, but I plan to get better at it!

I generally avoid watching superhero movies since.. You know if you've seen one you've seen them all... I can't count how often I've seen NY being destructed by aliens/monsters/dinosaurs/mutants/wizards/sharks/alien robots/nazis from outa space... and so on and so on. It became very boring to me.
But after reading that thread (and the many other about that movie on twitter) I'm actually interested to watch it.. But I think I'll wait till its out on amazon or so
