  • Twin Cabins

This one, I had to finish in Corona. All the spaces went well, except for the bathroom mirror shot. I was getting strange artifacts that I was told is fixed, but not released yet. The bathroom in Corona went so well I decided to try the other views and, let me tell you, it went smooth. These will end up being an animation, so I eventually have to bring it back into NEXT for GPU speed.

And here are the exteriors, which I posted awhile back.

The interiors look good but (and it difficult to see correctly due to the small size of the images) some of the exterior context doesn't seem to match correctly both in perspective and tonally.

I spent a month asking for photos they wanted me to use and these are what they came up with.

I requested a high-resolution. I can't image all they have are thumbnails, but that's what they sent. I am hoping to get high-resolution before I do the final animation.

It's difficult when they do that, hopefully they will send the high res photos but either way, I would suggest rendering the interior and exterior on separate layers so you have more freedom in post.

As you already have an exterior environment, could you render a dome of it and render the animation cameras twice - one for the interior and the other for the exterior?

I haven't done animation for a long time, so I want to keep it simple.

Hmm....isn't it worthwhile to make a 3D environment for them? Would look way better for sure. Then as the above poster suggests, just render your own spherical image to speed up the animation
Sad that clients can harm their own image quality by a lack of input anyway.

What's the best workflow to get the Backplate to look realistic except for actually modelling the exterior environment?

This is basically a 3D matte painting - there are many many resources online.

Using the example of a standard arch vis interior animation, the best way in my opinion is to create some basic geometry for the ground, tree line, fences etc.. render out the middle frame of the camera path if the camera is moving in a slow linear track. Paint it up in photoshop and map it back onto the geometry and render it out as a pass that can be comped in post similar to how an image is created in layers in photoshop.

If you don't or can't model anything to represent the exterior environment then create it in photoshop and do a 2.5d track in AE or whatever comping software you use. If the camera moves alot then there may be parallax issues which can be dealt with by splitting the environment up by distance eg. trees in foreground and background and mapping those onto different planes. In AE you would move and scale the planes away from the camera whereas in Fusion or Nuke you could use the 3D environments and map the images onto planes.

oh my god hopefully they can accept the down grade version for final render.
                        Best regards,

We settled on a full 360 equirectangular panorama image from Shutterstock, which worked and looks great.

Looks good. Did you comp it in or is it on the scene as a plane or so?
