I have the hardest time with white, which is always overexposed. This white is 140,140,140 with little reflection. Other than that, I am happy with this one. The hedges are AutoHedges.

I am pretty sure you are aware of it, but maybe turning down burn value to something like 0.85 could help with that?

I usually do that in the VFB, but I lose information in PS. I'll try the burn value.

I colour map / tone map everything. Full exponential or reinhard. (Unless Im going into Nuke). Anything thats going into PS is fully tonemapped in render and I add the contrast back in PS. Makes working on white cars super easy, white houses surely must be the same.

I almost always keep my burn value lower than .85, I want to believe it works on "deeper level" than highlight burn curve in VFB, thus you don't lose much contrast while getting rid of burns. It would be nice if some expert could confirm it.

Here is an update. I use a VRay Sun/Sky and .85 burn. The clouds are just a brush in PS. I did some color grading in post, as usual, and I think it is better.

On a side note, this guy said that I was too expensive, a lot more than others. He ended up using me because, “at least I’m in the states”. I always say, if they complain about price they’ll be more difficult to please. This guy spend three weeks making changes and once done I got a list of changes as if it was the first time he saw the rendering. There is still something not working for me on the image, but I can’t put my finger on it. I think it is the classic case of looking at it too much. I need to take a break and look at it with new eyes in a couple days.

Branch/foreground tree upper left of comp would help make it less “here’s a plot of land in forest with a house”

Do you mean upper right? He gave me some photos to go by and he wanted people to know that there are empty lots on both sides.

I compared the two images side by side inside my VFB and there is a clear improvement! Burn value definitely helped to preserve many geometry details that otherwise were burn, you also added much more depth to the image with the shadows and all. Adding some breathing space to the tree line on he left was a good decision imo - it does not look like a forest line anymore. Roof tiles would benefit from some bump. You can now see the emptiness of V-ray sky in the windows reflections btw. Overall I love it!

I played around more and this is a burn value of .4, which really seemed to have balanced things out. I went back to an HDRI, too. I also removed the environment fog, which I don't think helped anything and the foreground tree hanging over.
