        Hi Sascha

What should i say. Well i am jalous if this is the right word. Starting from this point you may get the chance to go to the highest level.

They should be stupid not to take you. on a technical point, theres not so much you could learn .

You all cant immagine what all was included in this short. CAT, extra bones, max skinwrap and skinmorph, cloth fx, microtriangledisplacement for extra fine details, rendertime mesh smooth, GI, depth of field, motionblur, also reactor ? , sss, .....

This guy proves, he is the one who would do the next step if they let him in.

of course there are other things i beleave that could get better . But at last this should be told from otheres who have much more experiance than me, for example in animation, and storybording as well as in dramatourgie. Here i think there are here and there some things to improve. But after 4 years studying this. I Guess we only see Sascha from behind.

        So good luck my friend.

And maybe who knows, someday, we meet again at lichtecht-animations.com

        Tom

Hey Guys, Thanks a LOT for the comments!
I took a day off yesterday and enjoyed some Real Life again. I had almost forgotten how warm Sun and a little warm breeze feels like. Also today i just made my job at the playground and afterwards i did not have a bit of a wish to fire up max again. So please give me some more days for the stuff.

              Now to you guys.

@Mark David: Thanks man! All the Luck to you, your family and your projects too!

@jujubee: Thanks! Maybe i could do that. (i already got a mail from someone who was interested, cool!) But personally i feel that i just started with animation and that i still have a long way to go. When i go to this school now, i know that i get a really solid base of classical, animation and technical knowledge that i can use for my whole life. (It's a broader education than you can get at animationmentor or in a studio.) I will also get the chance to make a longer short film together with other people and get a lot of very important contacts. That's something that may get difficult too when working in a studio.

@yeohyip: Thanks! Hope to see some more Character work from you too in the next time.

@DaForce: Good you like the "vibe" man! Just give me some more days for the goodies.

@ Erik de Graaf: Thanks a Lot. With all those Thumbs pressed i'm really feeling better this time.

@Tisho: That's exactly my point too... erm just Thanks dude!

@cpnichols: Thank you! I thought about sending it to some Festivals and maybe also Siggraph but i did not have the time to read the requirements and restrictions of all those places yet. I think i will do that in the next days.

@Gijs: Thanks! I will need a bit of luck indeed. The competition is friggin awesome.

              @percy: Thank you!

@Tom: Greetings to you my friend!
When i think of you in those days i always get a little sad. I wish you could show your talent more often and on work that's really pushing the visuals to the extreme. I know if you would have time and the right support you could do KICKASS Short Films with a wise, curious and humourous look at the world and with brilliant visuals and effects.
Unfortunately there are just not the right conditions right now for you to do this. You have a wife, kids and partners and therefore certain obligations. But hey, i heard that wife and kids can make a man happy too...
So enjoy your life as a daddy as much as you can NOW. I'm sure lichtecht is on the right track too. Just try to push the direction of the company towards the more interesting stuff and make demos so people can see that you guys can really do this too. (you can!)
Tom, i'm really convinced we will meet again and do cool things together. It's just too much fun to work with you and lichtecht.character sounds like a cool thing to me

@metroberlin: Haha yeah you're right, the city is not nearly as cool as Hamburg although i like the Flair of those smaller, southern cities in germany. Stuttgart is just a few kilometers away and i can visit my friend in Heidelberg. So i should feel fine there i think.

              ----

Ok guys i have to sleep now. (This Text may be full of errors...)
If you guys want you can drop me a comment or a vote over at cgtalk.
Thanks for those who already did!!

OK, I beg to differ from the rest of the comments, but I was rather unimpressed by what I saw. OK, technically - from a rendering point of view - its great. Far better than anything I could do. So well done for that.

BUT - where's the story? I was left with a feeling of 'eh?'. What was it all about? Maybe I'm missing something. I think if you could employ your obvious rendering talents to a good story, you would have been more successful. Shorts like this need to convince a strong mood. This didn't. It wasn't funny. The character wasn't funny. His actions weren't funny. With computer generated characters, you can afford to be far more extreme in your animation to get over a point.

The camera movement/DOF was nice, but perhaps a little overdone. There just wasn't enough going on to keep your interest.

Very good rendering though. Just disappointing overall.
                  Kind Regards,
                  Richard Birket

not easy...i never attempted to do such a thing because i know i would fail.
i think doing both writing/directing and animating almost never works, except for some crazy nerds like ruari
i remember that i was very dissappointed with the cathedral short, there was a big hype a few years ago and i just thought that it sucked.
3d artists should collaborate more with writers and traditional art people. unfortunately they seem to live in another universe.

Tricky. I have to disagree with you. You have to see it as to what it is. Its obviously not intended to blow you away, and therefore I dont think your crit is adequat. I think that the narow screenplay is grate. his humming for example.

roppin - I think that is exactly what we should all do - see things for what they are. In a 3D-wise community such as this, we can all get just a bit overexcited about render quality, render times, hardware, software etc etc. I always try and imagine sitting my mum (or a client) in front of something like this and seeing their reaction.

plastic has hit a nail on the head with what he/she says about collaborating more. We are jack-of-all-trades, masters-of-none.

(I think forums are too sfae when it comes to criticism - after all, what is the point of uploading work if not to get an honest response. It is certainly how I have improved my work)

You must have missed the thread where we were helping him with his animation by tearing it appart

Maybe some specific critiques on areas that you see are lacking would be more constructive rather than saying it like you know nothing about animation "it's not funny" over and over is quite vague

This is a strange reaction. In what way has the animation been torn apart? Please explain.

To reiterate, my specific critique - which I thought was very clear and to the point, but hey, I can take critique on my criticism - would be that the animation lacks a good story. It also lacks emotion - happy, sad, angry. I don't care which. What is the story? Is the man dreaming? Is he a failed bullfighter? Is he in a lunatic asylum? I will say again - so as to assure Jon that I am not tearing the animation apart - that the render quality is very good indeed. This in itself shows you to be thoroughly competent. My comments are to make it better still. That is all.
                            Kind Regards,

geddart had a WIP thread where he posted some animations that got worked over.

I think its great. Is it festival quality like someone mentioned? Im not sure, but how often does someone produce something of that length and at that quality?

Lets also take into context that this animation was done to get into a school Its fine if its not incredibly polished script wise. he's obviously a good potential for the school hes applying for. I think you need to lower your expectations a little.
