  • House in North Germany

The goal was to create a classic german house and garden to show a range of outdoor lights.

Everything is 3d, including every brick in the wall and paving. Lots ForestPack and Railclone was used. More pictures https://www.behance.net/gallery/9787...utdoor-Classic

Only on this forum is 'the brickwork is awesome' a non-weird comment

      Good pics.

I have played with the idea of 'real' bricks but it's getting the amount of individual textures that is an issue....I'm waiting for a great procedural generator for brick until I commit

Hi, that's an impressive model and setup for the bricks. Good job!
As for the lighting and shading, are you aiming for photorealism? If that's the case I would consider:
        - Adding natural subtle dirt in parts where you would expect it. Could be added procedurally with VRayDirt and some texturemaps in the radius.
        - Adding some amount of specular reflections for most of the materials, especially plants and definitely all the metalic objects.
        - Double-Checking your lights: Somehow the small floor lights cast very strong light on the floor but the light bulb is not bright enough to justify that. Same is true for the lights next to the door where the light on the wall is brighter than the actual light source. Also some of the bigger lights have a very bright light source but almost no light on the floor.

Yeah Bobby I often do brick that way but many times it's just not good enough. It's quite easy to spot flipped copies to me, so you still need imo so many uniques to make it viable - maybe I'm being too picky but with the types of brick I'm needing it's hard. Also for the type of thing I'm thinking it would need each brick to be unwrapped properly initially, allowing for multiple really faithful copies. A bit overkill but it would be cool
I also quite often get weird brick/stone to do, that is really really hard to find...irregular and the like, such as cotswold stone - hence the real, individual approach, so a generator would be great....one day!
For something recent I made a load of real bricks to derive maps from, though I was in a rush and so did in fact use the models as it was quicker to do so, with a rough procedural tex. Worked well enough, so it's possible
with lots of brainy scripting I imagine...

Thank You for the nice comments.

The bricks are all megascans. Quixel had just published them, when I needed a few scanned bricks. They all have rather round edges. Sadly, bricks with sharp edges were only available after I finished the project. The next time I could change the textures a lot more and maybe create more brick variations from the 3d bricks. I distributed the bricks with railclone. Each row has its own spline for distribution. This made it easier to get the correct order for each row, especially at the corners and and around the windows and doors.

JonasNöll Next time I will check that the lights are more balanced, good pointer. My client did not comment on that but you are right. The textures could be better with more time and care.
