  • Military Development - Final Stills and Animations

    Hello fellow V-Rayers,

Here is a job that I finished up last week - a proposed military center. I spent about 4 weeks total on this - 1 week for the interior, 1 week for the exterior, and two weeks for the aerial. C&C are very welcome.

    Jason

There were 1,245 RPC objects in this scene and the fog/haze was created using a z-depth map sequence, comped in AE.

    I'm using:
    3D Studio MAX 6
    V-Ray 1.46 Advanced
    Adobe After Effects
Dual Xeon 3.6's, Dual Xeon 2.0's

I'd really like to take the aerial animation to the next level so any tips or suggestions to improve it would be great...heck, any tips on any of the renderings would be great.

    Very nice work!

The animations look good. I especially like the exterior. Nice idea.

I don't really have any critics. They look good.

great work. very well done. I wish the interior was a little bit brighter though. Are personnel expected to be writing and reading at their seats?

exterior animation is NEAT ! Are those rpc trees ?, shadows of the trees on the video make me think about rpc, but not on your stills...
              congrats

                great stuff!
Can you explain how you did the fog/haze thing with z-depth?

Hi guys. Thank you for the comments; I appreciate you.

I agree that the conference center interior came out a little dark, but every color in the place is dark. I also needed it to be dim to realistically "project" the movies and images on the screens.

The exterior still image of the three buildings does not use RPCs as observed by chris-x//. They were a combination of Marlin Studios and Xfrog textures.

The exterior aerial flyaround used about 1250 RPCs, trees and parking lot cars. The shadows were placed using the noon-time shadow script on their site, which, by the way, works really well. The script places a spotlight above each tree and uses a predefined shadow map which is projected onto the ground. So in addition to 1250 RPCs, I also have about 1250 projector spots!

The distance fog was done with help from this forum. I read a ton of posts on the subject and figured it out with the help of a colleague. I gave everything a white material (color doesnt matter) and removed all lights. I then rendered out a series of z-depth images using the default scanline. This image series was loaded into Adobe After Effects and used as a "Luma Inverted Track Matte" (which is a fancy name for a mask) over a light-blue solid layer which gave me the fog color. (Thanks Wayne) Very simple concept and easy to manipulate fog depth using Levels.

Thanks again for all the comments. If you have any more critiques, please send 'em my way.

Thanks for giving a peek under the hood for the fog concept.
I was trying to do the same with fog, and also went trough a lot of posts on here. I did a little test with g-buffer and z-depth in vray. But I could not get what I wanted. Now I will try your option and see if scanline still works on my pc, havent used it in ages
