Hi Open range
I Didnt like this render, there is no reflections, no refractions, materials looks awful, the stone looks so Bad, shadows are really poor.
You need to improve more your renders, this render looks like a cartoon.
The vegetation looks horrible, work harder with the trees.
The light is so poor.
Sorry to Say that, but You need to improve really a Lot, spend more time with materials Also the tonemapping is horrible
The render seems like a cartoon in a mountain valley.
This is one of the worst render i have seen in My life.
Also You use 3d max You can achieve a Lot better renders with 3d max and vray
Take your time to develop the composition, this is a really bad composition in everything
Sorry to Say that but You really need to improve a Lot more
Just look at the Wood materials...??? Did You really like it??
Vray has so many functions to create a really Nice Wood materials.
Also the stone looks really bad!!!
There is no depth in the render, it feels plane.
Is better to Say the truth than lie and You feel confortable and don't improve over all.

Thank you for your detailed review! I will absolutely strive to meet the higher standards you propose. Possibly you could post an example of your work as an example for me?mark f.

luisgamino2 - Really? That isn't the way to critique someone's work! You said nothing of importance, and it was only meant to break someone's spirit.

Glorybound i didnt Say anything Bad, i just told Open range that he really needs to improve it was just that, My intention was never to broke a spirit and i think you take in the wrong way.
I have been looking the renders of Open range, he has posted so many renders and i always observe that he still doesnt improve much, is always the same he doesnt take care about materials.
The other day he posted again another cabin in the forest and i was almost to tell him that he really needs to improve.
Well this time i told him just the truth, i hope he doesnt take in the Bad side.
But i'm very honest and i prefer to tell the truth in order to improve.
Someone has to tell the truth to Open range...!!! A render is not just the diffuse material, some clouds, some vegetation and simple sun.
I Use vray for sketchup and in this week i'm going to publish my work here.
I hope it helps Open range to improve.

The materials are specified by the architect and small image examples of what is desired are provided. Not sure but I'm thinking re-claimed barnwood, grey quarried stone, rough sawn wood are not very reflective? The vernacular and DRB approval boards at this resort are not keen on, and do not allow reflective materials in this case.
There is a lot of refection in the glass….. fwiw.
The backplate photo is from the site, taken by me. That is where the house will sit and what will be seen in the distance. Formal lawns and landscape are not allowed. Native grasses and plantings requiring little water are specified.
This is commercial work, following a plan from an architect. Not an attempt at fine art.
What is a disconnect for me is that while you are offended….. the client and architect and DRB love it. Go figure.
Still, I am always striving to do the best I can and all critique is welcome, so thanks for your comments. I welcome the invite to see your inspirational work!mark f.

Hi Open range
The Wood texture and the stone texture Even if it is a rustic architecture has some reflections, not too much but have reflections.
Also the diffuse material looks in a really bad Quality, try to use maps with higher resolution.
Try to increase the light in the interior space i almost don't see anything in side.
Play more with vegetation (colors looks like fosforescent)
The way the lighting is hitting the house and the exterior doesnt help too much.
Did You play with two sided material and at the same time did You play with multisub tex for the leaves, so You have a tree with a little difference in color.
If You have metals try to increase the ggx tail fallof along with glossines and the ior
A don't really like the Windows, i don't know why but seems like acrilic and not glass.
Do You use edges textures for your materials??
This increase a Lot the realism.
Do You use composite and do You use tonemapping???
Your render is so lineal use some luts to increase the colors.
This is another point the colors of the materials looks Bad.
For the displaccement use a little blur so stones doesnt look too Sharp
Give the plants in front of your render some dinamic movement, in Nature You are never going to see paterns, give some randomness.

I don't know what kind of lighting did You use??
Try to use a hdri with a Big resolution ( Adan Martin are great 3d collective 16k with a descent price) in a dome light.
Use the adaptive checkbox
The lighting in that render doesnt feel right.
Watch Adan Martin videos on You tube.
I have been watching his videos for hours and hours and hours he is a Master and he explains really well vray for 3d max.
Even if You don't understand spanish You are going to learn a Lot.
He explains every subject with high degree of accuracy and in real depth.
I use his skys, luts and dirt textures
Also use some dirt materials in your render that helps a Lot for rustic architecture.

The stone and wood have vray material with reflective amount at about 6, glossiness at about 0.9, fresnel @ 5.
I set the vray sun/sky to match the same time of year, day and geo location of the site/background photo, minor adjust from there.
The only metal is the rusted corten roof.
The window glass is a very simple vray glass material. The existing house to the right, screened by a couple f spruce trees I added has a lot of glass. In the site photos it looks very much the same as on the rendered model. You cannot see inside.
Those are cgaxis trees. I spend some time trying to adjust the materials on the trees but my mandate is to show the architecture.
Most of the materials use edges texture 1/8 - 1/4” radius.
I put the vray filmic tonemap on and it looks awful. I use that for interiors always, but it never looks right on exteriors for me. Ido add dehaze and clarity with camera raw at post in photoshop.
Thanks again for your review and I look forward to seeing your renderings for inspiration and comparison.mark f.

Also You can give some atmospheric effects like Enviroment fog or aerial perspective, so You can increase the depth of your render.
Also i observed there is some noise in that render, try to increase the subdivids and at the same time lower the noise treshold.
IF You can use some depth of field just to Focus the cabin well this is going to help a Lot.
Take your time and develop the scene with patience and effort and You are going to have a really Nice renders.
Also play at least with white balance, this is crucial for a great tonemapping.

For,all of my renderings I am trying to mimic the extensive amount of professional real estate photography that is published here. There is essentially never any atmospheric fog or aerial perspective type effects in these. The air is very clear at 9k feet above sea level in the southern rocky mtns. Showing clear views of the mountains beyond (views) is very important. Mountains obscured or diminished by fog = negmeyer.
I cannot recall ever seeing depth of field used in any of the high end real estate sales publications here, and the times I have included it the client has complained about out of focus elements.
I’m not sure where you are seeing the noise? Maybe it is the lower res /quality of the jpg used for posting here?
Possibly this commercial type imagery is offensive to your fine art sensibilities? That’s perfectly understandable.Last edited by OPEN_RANGE; 28-08-2022, 09:06 PM.mark f.

This is a render i did like 3 months ago, this is a photograph from My celular, the forum only allow 2mb. That is why looks blurred
I don't know how can i insert the complete image.
I would like to know how to upload the high resolution render to apreciate the details.
I am Ready to show My work
here is another one Open range, this is My first time i publish My work here in all My life.
I take My time to full develop the scene Open range, i don't care if it takes time, i'm really an architec who wants to express beauty and armony in spaces, i design these spaces and i render too
Here is another one, look at the colors Open range, always work hard, because architecture needs time an effort.
Details, materials, correct lighting, tonemapping, a Lot of effects
It takes time to render but at the end i'm happy with the result
This is one of My favorites, i did it like 2 months ago.
I use vray 5 gpu for sketchup Open range
Thanks for your comment.
All these are just photos that i took from My cel to the render, tomorrow i'm going to try to upload renders with higher resolution.
