two women...two man...two months...small renderfarm...
That idea looks promising. However I've always had ridiculously slow render times with 3d displacement as opposed to 2d. Am I missing something or is that the way it is?

powerandrubber: yeah, you're right, the 3D displacement is much slower for me, too. Also very memory-intensive. Large planes crash Max on my system with 3D Mapping.
I have managed to do it with 2D displacement, too. I applied a UVW map to the ground plane, then wired the UVW Gizmo to the camera along with a bit of script. I thought it was going to work beautifully, I even had the UVW gizmo rotate with the camera.
I applied my displacement as a blend material: a blank material and a checker map blended through a gradient ramp so that the checker faded off.
Unfortunately, the UVW is being tiled across the surface, causing the gradient ramp to repeat! Turning off tiling in the map properties seems to have no effect in VRay displacement. D'oh!
Also, it would work best if I could have the gradient ramp and UVW map in texture channel 2 so that they moved independently of the displacement map, but VRay Displacement only accepts Channel 1.
I can post the scene if anyone wants to have a play.

CCS: Yeah, you're right, I don't know why I said that. I meant VRay will only let you use one channel, not a combination. I meant I'd like to have the gradient ramp in one channel and the displacement image in another.
