this reminds me of the brazil 2 test where it rendered 16 million polys of some statue copied many times like this in 2 min....
A pity you couldnt get all the lights in the render... not 1024 now is it

You mean that not all of them are visible? That's right, but still, every single light in the scene affects the whole scene, so all the lights had to be taken into consideration... a light source doesn't have to be visible itself to see it's effect - you can see highlights from all sources on the spheres.
Interesting. I know this is just a test to search for limits, but I am wondering, could a similar rendering like this be produced by replacing all those lights with a single mapped light and produce the same result in a fraction of the time?
Anyhow, it seems Vray is not optimized for this kind of stuff, maybe another option would be a light mat array with a portal in front of it (I'm just typing while thinking here)

Vlado have you done any changes to vray since you are doing this test? Right now just using 2 or 3 area lights slows things down a lot compared to having one light which is really annoying.
